Food waste Monday (well, Tuesday yet again)

Pin It    I really wasn't feeling that good yesterday, so I just crawled in bed early and slept. But today I'm feeling much better. I'm still a little weak and my nose is running but at least I don't have a sore throat or chills any more. And it seems like I'm getting into a new habit- I forgot yet again to post our food waste.

This week wasn't very good for us. We threw away this:

Yum.. some of our bread got moldy. Then some wilted salad:

And now this:

This is a big orange elephant sitting in my refrigerator...My Dad got it when they were here, and for the past ten days I've been looking at it and moving it around (as much as you can move around a whole gallon of Sunny D...). When my Dad bought it, he thought it was orange juice.Yeah, right! After just a couple of sips he realized his mistake! My kids can't stand Sunny D and so is my husband. I can tolerate it but that's just it-tolerate!! And there is no way, I could drink the whole gallon of it. So I deliberately let it expire...Bye bye , Sunny D. Finally, I can claim my fridge back!

I have no idea how much Sunny D usually costs but I've seen it in the ad for $5/2  on sale, so I'll say $2.50. And bread was $1.67 for 4, and we ate 1 little loaf (so, what...$1.24c?), and salad was 99c for the whole bunch but I threw away about 1/3 of it-33c.

So total wasted this week: $4.07. I wasn't sure if I should count Sunny D because I didn't actually buy it but then  it was something I wasted anyway, so I decided to add it to my total.

Total spent this month: $118.94
Total saved: $56.60
Left to spend this month: $161.06
YTD spending: $394.15
YTD savings: $207.81
YTD coupons used : 46
YTD waste: $30.70

  1. Can't believe you waited on the sunny d to expire. I would have seen if any of my friends wanted it and if not just chuck it and use the bottle for water or something. Either ways it is gone now so that is good.

    1. Oh, I did ask some of my friends, and nobody wanted it!! And a few actually reacted as if I'm offering them poison or something, so I just stopped. And I actually still have an empty bottle from it :)Nobody in my family likes Sunny D, and honestly, I'm happy about it. Kids already eat plenty of junk, and both Hubby and I are trying to lose weight, and Sunny D is plain sugar!

  3. I can't drink that stuff either - to me it tastes like oil. Yes, weird, I know. Since you didn't pay for it then at least there's no guilt attached to its loss!

  4. I'm ashamed to say I have seen my bread turn into that... more times than I want to confess! I never imagined I'd let bread go bad, but when you're eating for 1, it gets tough. I had to learn to buy smaller portions to avoid wasting food.

    1. We are a family of 4, and it still happens to us too :( We wanted to have this bread with some soup but it got spoiled before we had a chance to use it.

  5. I feel ya on the Sunny D. I didn't think it was very good when I was young. Now as an adult, I can't imagine having to drink a whole gallon!

  6. The rest of my family likes Sunny D however, I have never been a fan. It must have been a real disappointment if you thought you were getting orange juice.
