Food waste and a menu, week 6/11- 6/17

Pin It    I think I said a little too early that I'm feeling better. Last night my ear really started to hurt and homemade garlic treatments (thanks, Dr. Oz) didn't help. So I'm off to get a prescription today :(

We had a little bit of food waste this week. I found this among perfectly looking peaches. Gross!

I also had to throw away some fresh basil. It was sad because it was our homegrown basil and I was looking forward to make some pesto with it. But it went bad just way too quickly:

The peaches were only 49c/lb, and they were small peaches, so we probably "wasted" about 15c. I haven't really updated on our grocery shopping this month but I do keep track of it.

And our menu for this week:
Mon.- fried potatoes, baked beans and salad from our garden
Tues.- frittata, steamed broccoli, zucchini bread
Wed.- fish sticks, rice, frozen peas
Thurs.- crockpot chicken teriyaki , leftover rice, salad from our garden
Fr.- grilling!!
Sat.- leftovers/sandwiches
Sun.- soup, Father's Day potluck with a family

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Total spent this month :$151.68
Total saved: $50.16
Left to spend this month: $128.32
YTD spending: $1564.38
YTD savings: $833.12
YTD coupons used: 195
YTD waste: $31.32

I'll try to get back today with a little less boring post :)

PS-I will link this post to the amazing Kirsten's blog The Frugal Girl and her Food waste Fridays.

  2. I have taken cut basil from the garden and stored it on the counter in water. It keeps longer. If you leave it long enough, it will actually root to have new plants. I do this in the fall, to have basil through the winter.
