Spending money on books

Pin It    Do you buy books? I love reading. But I also enjoy the actual physical book. I like to flip the pages, like the feeling of paper in my hands. I often underline parts I enjoy and some of my books have up to ten bookmarks at a time (not counting cookbooks. These can have up to 20!).

But books are expensive. I often cannot justify spending money on them. That's why we get 85% of all the books we read from the library. But often I want to keep something I've read. So another place for a good and cheap read is at yard sales and thrift stores. Here's what I got today in DI (local thrift store):

Total spent $7. The books are in excellent condition and something I would definitely enjoy. So I bought:

1."The Complete Step-by-Step Diabetic Cookbook" by Anne C. Chappell. My best friend was recently diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes so I got it for her. The book is full of simple and delicious recipes and has full count for exchanges, carbs, proteins etc. Out of curiosity I found the retail price of this book on Amazon- $50.97!!! Seriously!! It's a pretty cool book but I doubt it's worth that much. But I think it will be really great for my friend.

2. "Fix it and Forget it Lightly" by Phyllis Pellman Good. She's a queen of slow-cooking. I have the original book by her (also from a thrift store :) and I love it. So I was really excited to pick up this one today. Retail value: $19.69 ($15.94  used)

3. "Women and Money" by Suzy Orman. I love Suzy! Over the years I've learned so much from her. It will be fun to see her perspective on money and women. Retail value of this book is not very high (only $3.90 according to Amazon) but I know I'll enjoy it.

4. "Cut Your Bills in Half" . Again the retail value of this book is not much higher than the previous one but out of almost 390 pages I'm sure I can find something I didn't know about saving a buck.

I think I did pretty good today to add to our library. How do you like to read your books? Anything good you can recommend?

  1. I am a sucker for a good book too and piece of cute fabric! I am reading the Elm Creek quilting series that I am enjoying by Jennifer Chiaverini. Nothing earth shattering just simple and sweet

  3. I'm definitely a "paper" reader... I have absolutely no desire for a kindle, kobo, etc... I do have some books in my iBooks APP, but will always grab a book first & foremost. I love the older cookbooks... also, Amish cookbooks are always great too! They always use real ingredients!

  4. I love books and love reading but rarely actually purchase a book. I just can't justify the expense when I can read them for free from the library or borrow other's books. I was really nervous when I received a Nook for Christmas that I would be tempted to purchase books with the tap of my finger, but I've hardly spent anything. I can get Nook books online from my library and Nook offers a free book every Friday and sometimes they are pretty good.

    1. I like this book so much, especially in summer when it's too hot to use the stove.

  6. Our Friends of the Library at our local library sell used books to earn money for the library. Hardbacks are a dollar and paperbacks are fifty cents and they have a good selection. Most of what we read comes from the library, but we get books from here also. Especially when we go on vacation. I don't want to worry about something happening to library books while on vacation.

    1. In our neighborhood library we have an area where they sell some books for 50c-$1 but that hardly ever have something good there. The last book I got there was plain garbage!!

  7. I love to read a good book! My daughter's library has a section where they sell books for 25c-$2 and we have found some great books there. It is my favorite spot to visit when I'm at my daughter's. Thrift stores are great too! Sometimes purchase from Amazon or Costco but love the used book prices:)

  8. I have a bookcase almost full of books that I haven't read yet and still can't resist a thrift shop or book sale. Twice yearly we have a huge second-hand book fair here and that's where a lot of my books come from. Our library doesn't have a lot of the kind of books that I like to read unfortunately. Amazon is still a weakness of mine though!
