DIY rope vase

I really like the look of jute or rope vases. I've been wanting one for a while but I needed a bigger size and the cheapest I could find was $39.95. Nope...not happening! So I decided to make one myself.

Here is what I used:

Thrift store vase ($3)
Nylon rope (already had), I used a thinner kind
Spray adhesive (already had)
Black spray paint (already had)

I forgot to take a picture of a vase before I started (oh I was just too excited to start :)) but it was a plain 13.5" glass vase. I basically sprayed the adhesive over the whole vase-just not on the bottom obviously-and wrapped the rope around it tightly, starting from the top:

I let it dry for a few hours than sprayed black paint over it, including the inside of the top. Lots of jute/rope vases that I saw did not have the inside. One of the reasons why I used a glass vase is to be able to put real water and flowers in it if I ever want to. Here's what it looked like after I sprayed it:

I let it dry completely, then sprayed one more time until it was all covered.  Here's the finished result! I added some branches from our tree in the front yard that I spray-painted white and added a "birch tree" affect (to remind me of home, I guess :) Russia is famous for it's birch trees! ):

Another fun and  inexpensive accessory at Frugal and Thankful Chez!

  1. I really love the look like this. Certainly doesn't even look homemade, looks like something from Pottery Barn.

  6. Lovely. Sweden is also covered with birch. My Grandmother's name was Bjorklund. Translates to birch land. How do you say birch in Russian?

    1. Hi Renata, thanks for stopping by! I used Elmer's multi-purpose spray adhesive(you can buy it at any craft store or Walmart)and a very basic cheapest spray paint. Good luck on your project :)
