Food waste and a menu, week 9/10-9/16

Pin It    Will I ever have a no-waste week again?? I will soon forget what it is! I tried, I really tried, I promise. But I still had to throw away a few things. I forgot to take pictures but I threw away some ham from a freezer (we will really eat out of the freezer in the next few weeks!!) and a pear that went beyond saving. But I'm most upset about this:

These are five pints of canned beets (not pickled, just canned). It was my first time to can them and I followed the directions of the Blue Book to the T but not a single can sealed :( They actually all popped but still didn't seal. It was preeety gross:

I think I'll stick to store-bought from now on :(

This week we try to eat out of the pantry-freezer-fridge for the whole week. I want to stay away from grocery stores period. Plus I have so much translating work to do that I won't have time to shop anyway. And our fridge is more than full. We have plenty of fruit and enough veggies from our garden. Look at what I got this week too:

The most delicious peaches from a friend (they are to die for! I think I ate 4 the first day:) She gave me the whole bucket!!):

And some awesome super-fresh organic eggs from my sister (from her chickens):

Our menu will be pretty simple this week:

Mon.- eating out (Kid's Birthday)
Tues.- pulled pork, corn on the cob
Wed.- pasta with tomato sauce, salad
Thurs.- cheese broccoli soup
Fr.- shepherd's pie
Sat.- omelet, veggies
Sun.- hamburgers, chips, salad

And lots and lots of peaches :)

What are you eating this week? Please, share any simple and quick recipes you have!

  2. Sorry about your beets :( My mom had a huge garden every year but she never canned anything. She said we did well to eat from the garden all year and she was too sick of it to can, LOL. We froze sweet corn and bought veggies on sale all winter.

    1. I love canning but I never tried beets before. This year I made 5 quarts of pickled beets and 5 pints of these. Pickled beets are fine but not these. I don't know what happened :(

  3. Don't give up on your canning, Lena, I have also had some "dude" over the years. Were your liquid, jars and lids all hot when you put the beets in and placed lids on? I love the farm fresh eggs I get from my friend at Dejong Acres Farm, 4 dozen at a time !

    1. Yes, everything was hot :( I followed all of the instructions. I will definitely keep going with canning, just not with beets.

  4. Sorry about your beets. I love beets. Sounds like it's going to be a good week eating from your pantry and fridge.

    1. Ugh, I'm sorry :( I had one can of bad peaches last year too. Hopefully the rest of your cans are all good.
