The last update on the Low/No spend challenge this month...

In the past two days I've been really busy with work. It's always worse at the end of the month but they also changed the reporting system on us mid-month, so it's a royal pain!

But I thought I would give a quick update on how we did with the challenge in January. Most of you know that this month was a very hard one for us. But we still managed to stay on top of almost all of our goals. Well, at least financial ones. We shopped a little more than I hoped and ate out a little more than we should've but, hey, to say it short, January was a month I will never forget but also will never miss...

Still, we stayed within our grocery budget with a whooping 21c to spare... Haha, I know... but I made it, right? :) We also had 12 no-spend days (my goal), and I hope to repeat it next month.

And because our medical bills weren't too bad and I worked a little extra in January, we were able to put $750 into savings.I have to say, I'm pretty stoked about it! All we hoped for was to break even, so I'd say it was a success! We reached all of our goals, and I'm pretty happy about it.

Now I need to work on our February budget and it looks like it's going to be blown before it even starts. We will do some big buying furniture-paint-and-redecorate things, but I'll tell you more about it next week.

And how was your January? Are you ready for February to roll in?

  1. Congratulations on a successful January and good luck for February. All I currently want for February is, no rain, because it rained all through December and January with only the occasional break.

  4. Good morning, I think you did great with all you had going on.
January was a good financial month for us. I hope February will be too but husband will be seeing the surgeon about his upcoming cataract surgery, hopefully our insurance will cover it as much as they did his knee surgery.

  5. January was a pretty good month, especially since it was a 3-check month. I managed to save away about $30 after all was said and done. Hey, 21c leftover is in the black, not the red, so good job! I love seeing your decorating, so looking forward to Feb!

  7. Congratulations on adding more to your savings. I haven't had a great January either and I know how hard it is to keep spending in track when you are worrying about more serious things.

    1. Yes, it's so true. There were days in January when money was the very last thing on my mind... I was actually pretty surprised that we could reach our gals, considering...

  8. Congrats on managing through a very challenging period, Lena. January ALWAYS seems to bring extra trials, it seems, but you had WAY more than your share :( While I always hesitate to say "It's all uphill", I hope any difficulties in February are small and easily overcome :)

  10. You did great. We actually ate at home more than usual this month, but had an unexpected car repair that more than took that savings, so we're still in the hole. Still, it could be worse.

    1. Oh, it stinks... We will look into fixing our minivan in February because we've been a 1-car family for the past three months. But I'm dreading those car repair bills...
