Food waste Monday and a couple of updates

Pin It    This morning started really busy for me. I did two loads of laundry, them took the Kid to the doctor. His rash (Fifth disease) is not going away and it's actually itching pretty bad right now. So the doc gave us a couple of prescriptions that Hubby dropped off in the afternoon. Hopefully, it will help clear out his skin.

We stopped by the Russian store on the way home (it's in the neighborhood where I doctor works, so I don't go there very often) and left with a $38. 60  damage worth of food. The Russian store is expensive! But I need my native food sometimes. I always buy lots of Russian pickles, summer sausage, Russian sauerkraut. Or and mayonnaise. I'm sorry, all the mayo lovers, out there but if you haven't tried A Russian mayo yet, you don't know what you are missing!! It's SO good and creamy, American version cannot compare...Sorry :)  So I got all of that and a few more things. Bye bye, my grocery budget...

Talking about our budget, we actually did really good last week. I wanted to spend $25 at first but then my Hubby found the receipt that we forgot about. And we had to buy Benadryl unexpectedly for the Kid (almost $7!!). So I bumped it to $50 for a week, and we spent $45.65 (and saved about $15). We also did great in all the other categories, so this month looks very optimistic so far.

So when I came back home, I did another load of laundry, some dishes and cleaned the fridge. We have very little food waste this week. I didn't throw away anything today but on Friday I had to chuck some black bean salsa:

I love black bean salsa but, unfortunately, I'm the only one who eats it. There was about a cup left (about $1 worth, but could be even less) that was forgotten on the back of the fridge. But that was the only food waste this week. We ate LOTS of leftovers. I'm still following our 2-week menu that I created last week but, I think, next time I will stick to my 1-week plans. It just works better for us.

And the last thing I wanted to share with you today is a picture of my beautiful tulips. The spring is definitely in full bloom right now!

Have a wonderful Monday, everyone!!

Total spent this month (in one week): $143.72

You are making me want Russian mayo! And pickles. and all sorts of yummy things. When we moved from Chicago, we lost our Polish grocery store and I miss it sometimes. Esp. when people start talking about pickles and sausage! :) Enjoy!

    1. Polish cuisine has lots of similarities with the Russian one, that's for sure. We are blessed to have 4 different Russian stores here in the state. And they are all fairly close to us.

    1. It is. It's definitely my weakness-and one store when I rarely count every penny. That's why I only go there once a quarter:)

  5. I understand your need to your homelands food. My parents are Swedish and we love all things from that country. Beets, pickled herring, lingonberries, pancakes. I can make all the Swedish delicacies and so can my girls. Pass on the heritage.

    1. What kind of pickles do you have in Russia? I miss the pickles back home too. We have pickled tomatoes and my favorite is pickled water melon. Yummmm.
I'd love to try Russian mayonnaise. I don't really like the ones I can find in store. I make my own mayo. It's easy, no additives, no unhealthy stuff, I use all natural eggs and olive oil.

    2. I don't even know how to explain. They just taste better :)We pickle tomatoes and combination of cucumbers and tomatoes, and pickled salads. Honestly, Russians pickle anything and everything, and I'm yet to hear about any botulism and stuff. But most of the people grow their own produce too! And Russian mayo is not slimy like American is and creamier.
