Food waste Monday

Pin It     I had a really crazy day today. I didn't even have a chance to create a menu. I want to make one for the next two weeks. I cleaned the fridge but I still want to go through our freezer. So the menu is coming tomorrow. We decided to bump up our grocery budget for this week to $50, partially because Hubby forgot to tell me that he spent $10.69 in Walmart last week. So this will come out of weekly budget. Plus we had to buy Benadryl for the Kid. He broke into rash which later turned out to be Fifth disease, a viral infection, harmless but looks scary. Our OTC meds come out of grocery budget too. And whatever is left we'll use for food this week. So it's mainly going to be milk, bread and produce.
We do have some food waste to report:

We threw away half a can of peas that somebody (wasn't me!!!:) left on the countertop overnight. We also had a bit of cilantro that got yucky and gross (I forgot to take a picture). And I actually wanted to use this cilantro to make some back bean salsa but never got to it.
So the peas were 50c/can= 25c wasted, and it was about 20c worth of cilantro

I'll update our grocery spending so far this month. We don't have much left but I still think we can do it.

Total spent this month (in one week): $115.04
Total saved: $58.96
Left to spend this month: $134.96+$7 from last month= $141.96
YTD spending: $839.94
 YTD savings: $566.89
YTD coupons used: 125
YTD waste: $28.77

  1. It always sucks when something gets left out overnight. Sometimes I end up falling asleep with a a good set of food left in the pot and not properly putting it up. I always feel horrible in the morning because my mom says it has to throw away because she doesn't want it making anyone sick.

  2. I remember my kids having fifths, my oldest was really sick with it but the other 2 were over it in no time. It is ugly however.

    1. It is ugly. He seems to be doing OK other than more itching right now. But he looks terrible!

  4. I do some of my best cooking when I have to use only the ingredients on hand--no trip to the store. I enjoy the challenge. Good luck with your groceries and budget.
