Say what? And August goals updates

Pin It      I wrote this post yesterday but our Internet wasn't working again :( So here it is:

It's Wednesday here which means it's time for an update on my goals this month. But first I wanted to share with you something funny. So yesterday we are listening to the radio and the commercial comes up. It basically goes like this," Were you arrested? Give us a call. We specialize in criminal defense, DIU etc.etc..." Then at the end of the commercial it says, "Call us to find out how to receive season tickets  for so and so college football team". Say what??? What do you need to do to receive seasonal tickets from a criminal defense law firm??? Rob a bank? I sometimes wonder who creates these advertisements and WHAT THEY ARE THINKING???

Anyway, back to my goals. I can't say I did really well but here it goes:

1. Declutter.

I did OK this week but not much to share. I mostly have unfinished projects :) I was organizing kid's clothes, a kitchen pantry and our closet last week but didn't finish any of them. Does it ever happen to you that you start working on something in one room and go to another room and start working on something there too, and end up not finishing either of the jobs? That was me this week :(  The only thing I finished is cleaning the canning jar area:

I have two shelves in the garage where I keep all my canning jars but over the years I've accumulated other empty jars from salsa, store-bought pickles etc. etc. "just in case". I was thinking that I will use them for storing something but to be honest, I have so many storage containers that I just don't NEED these cans. So today I got rid of not one, not two but all 26 jars!! Considering that I wanted to clear our house of 50 things this month, I'm right on the way :) Or is it cheating??
Here's the after picture of our clean and organized shelves:

Aww, so much better! I should have close to zero jars by the end of this canning season :)

2. Lose weight

Well, last week was very hectic. Honestly, I didn't exercise. I feel bad but I don't really have an excuse. And because of my laziness I didn't lose anything. On the contrary I gained back almost a pound :(

3. Stay within a budget in all areas.

Well, I'm failing :( It's only the middle of the month but I already failed in our grocery, gift and clothes areas of our budget. I already explained about the gifts last time. But I also did some case lot sales and that's what blew our grocery budget. I did a big two-week shopping trip yesterday. We should only need milk, bread and bananas for the rest of the month...I hope...Sigh...We also went to buy some clothes for the Kid for this new school year. I can't believe I have a Kindergartener on my hands!! It's crazy! But unfortunately clothes are a lot more expensive than I thought and planned :( On the other hand we are doing awesome in every other category of our budget and overall we spent a lot less so far this month than I thought we would by now. So hopefully, we should finish this month in overall green !

How are you doing with your goals?

  1. Your shelf looks great, I wish I had one shelf in my house that was empty! I have done such a bad job on our budget this summer :( gotta get back on track, you are doing great!

    1. This shelf is usually not empty :) I just canned a lot and keep canned stuff in a kitchen pantry.

  2. I have been failing miserably at my goals I am afraid to admit by gaining weight rather then losing, not keeping on top of my bookkeeping, feeling way too tired...hoping it turns around very soon. In the meantime your shelves look perfect as you appear to be heading off into the right direction of getting things done !

  3. I'm just being rather absent minded about my goals for this month (since I really didnt set any), but as long as I don't mess my budget, I guess I have nothing to worry about? Great job on getting rid of some of those jars! I hate when I start accumulating things that I think I may use (Ie, plastic containers), but then they just get to be too many.

    1. Budget is very important! And I already feel I'm messing it up. But I hope to figure it out until the end of the month.

  4. I'm plugging along over here. Usually, I'm full of excuses when it comes to making time for exercise so this is a mindset that I am fixing to change. I always feel so much better when I exercise so I'm trying to remember that!

On budget for all areas except college expenses but I am fixing to change that too .... a budget will be set and stuck to and that will be the end of overspending in that area.

It's incremental progress that adds up to big changes eventually. I am learning to be more patient with myself and being OK with the fact that I cannot lose 50 pounds overnight LOL

You're doing well with your goals .... just keep at it :)

  6. With school shopping it is easy to break a budget! Congrats on your baby off to kindergarten what an achievement.

Same I blew my budget this month trying to save a bit more money. I appreciate your blog, and the idea of the savings bar. It is making me think even if I can save $25 in savings per period it is savings. Thanks Lena!

  7. Hey, at least you have goals. My only goal for the longest time has been to have a good attitude no matter what. That's all I could handle for a while there. :) I love that you got rid of so many jars, and I say for SURE it counts toward your 50 things. Isn't it liberating to just get rid of stuff? I'm sure you already know this, but have you ever shopped at Kid to Kid for your kids' clothes? It's really not a bad total when you are selling stuff back to them and getting store credit to go toward your bill. I love it.

    1. Well, you've been through so much in the last year! I'm glad things are getting better now. And I actually went to KId to Kid just this weekend :) The Kid just needed more clothes than I thought.

  8. I do okay with most things I want to get done, except exercise. I will start again and try to remember that every time I do a little even if I don't sustain it, will be better than nothing. Good luck to you.

    1. Thank you! That's what I try to remember too! Even if I do a little sit-ups or push-ups it's better than none.
