Rock-a-bye baby...

Thank you everyone for stopping by yesterday and for your kind words. I'm feeling much better today. My back was hurting a bit this morning, so I was taking it slow most of the day. Honestly, I spent the majority of today on the couch :) But I wasn't lazy! We were doing a major de-cluttering, going through our papers. We are only about 2/3 done, and that's how much needs to be shredded already:

007-4-1

Yep, four bags...I'm a little ashamed to say but we even found a paper from 2000. But most of it was for the last 6-7 years (when I didn't do anything about paper clutter). We significantly downsized everything but tax documents and important papers. Plus (see, I'm getting defensive here...), one of these bags is Hubby's school stuff that he kept for a year. It's huge progress for us. I think at the end of cleaning I will have an empty file cabinet to put up for sale on classifieds. We'll see...

We also did a little bit of shopping today and our usual trip to the library with the kids. On the way there we were listening to  kids' songs on a CD. Did you ever pay attention to some of the words in certain songs?? For example, this one:

It's raining, it's pouring
The old man is snoring
He went to bed and he bumped his head
And couldn't get up in the morning

Is it just me, or is it not exactly appropriate for little kids? Or this famous lullaby:

Rock-a-bye baby, in the treetop
When the wind blows, the cradle will rock
When the bough breaks, the cradle will fall
And down will come baby, cradle and all...

This just sounds plain morbid, especially for a nursery song, to me! Did you ever think about the meaning of some of the songs you might have sang to your little ones (and I'll be the first to admit that I sang these particular nursery rhymes to my boys...)?

  1. Feel better. Our credit union has a giant shredder in the lobby that shreds and cross cuts so I try and take all our papers there to have them shredded.

    1. My husband actually works for a hospital, and they shred and then even burn papers (HIPAA thing). So he'll take all these bags there tomorrow to be sure it's all completely destroyed.

    2. I wonder if our credit union has a shredder we can use? I've never noticed, but I will ask. We are getting ready for a big paper purge and I think we will wear out our shredder.

  2. Hi Lena, sorry I missed your post yesterday - I'm glad you're feeling a bit better today x

I think paper de-cluttering is the hardest. I tried to go paper free last year and couldn't do it. I did really cut back though. I scanned a lot of sentimental stuff (kids cards etc) onto a memory stick.

    Good luck :)

    1. Thank you Laura! I would love to be paper-free but some of our bills don't offer this option :( I need to scan more of sentimental stuff too. All those little kids' pictures tend to multiply :)

  3. I believe I read somewhere that a majority of these nursery rhymes were originally political in nature -- will have to look that up again.

    1. I've read mixed things about them. Some say it's true, others not. It looks like they all have different origin.

  4. Wow, four bags! You rock! But it's such a great feeling to see a progress. We did some paper clutter with my boyfriend in the first week of January and we were surprised with the result! I don't know why but we had some magazines, leaflets with outdated prices from 2009/2010, ads from banks and insurance companies "just in case we wanted to change something" but in fact... even when we decide on anything like that we can find every info in internet. Good luck!

    1. I know! We had tons of medical bills (from both of my pregnancies especially), credit card statements ( I finally went paperless starting this year). I went through all the magazines last year. I think I had about 100 :)

  5. You are so right, some of them are down right creepy but we all sing them. Glad your feeling better

  6. Hahaha ... when we were growing up we never thought those rhymes to be bad, I think more so thinking we , as parents, were there to protect them from those things happening (should it have been REAL life) *Smile*. I hate paper clutter, I did a big paper declutter over a year ago. Happy to hear you are feeling better, Lena

    1. Thank you Cindy! I never really paid attention to the words until recently. That's when I was really surprised :)

  7. Wow.. lol! Good job!! Yes, so many lullabyes & nursery rhymes, fairy tales, etc... are quite unnerving! A lot of them have been changed to be "gentler" thankfully! lol!

    1. Yes, they did! Some of the original versions are even more interesting :)

  8. I'm a little late to the news but I am glad you are doing better. I did some paper de-cluttering in early December. I had quite a lot and I had to tear them by hand, no shredder. Majority was 2010 pay slips and other things.

And you are right about the children's songs. I never quite got that. Maybe they have a history. I'll Google that.

    1. Wow, it will be hard to do it by hand! Check out if your local credit unions do this. We have a few that do it for free.

  9. Yeah...Grimm's Fairy Tales, the original versions...those are interesting. Hope you continue to feel better.

  10. Good job Lena! So glad you're feeling better:) Might want to hang onto that file cabinet for awhile--they come in handy for so many things like storing craft supplies, kid's school papers and such.

Hadn't really thought about the nursery rhymes but the fairy tales are a bit scary!

  11. LOL Lena. I'm glad you're feeling better and good job on the decluttering! Just makes life so much easier :) I'm with you on those nursery rhymes .... most of them do seem to be sadistic lol

  12. We were just having that same conversation about nursery rhymes the other day! Between them and the original version of a lot of fairy tales, we figure there must have been some really traumatized little kids around, way back when. :)
