Food waste and menu, week 6/24-6/30.

What a crazy quick weekend it has been! I have no idea where it went. We had two Birthday parties plus Hubby was helping friends move. We also made our last shopping trip of the month. We have $2.31 left out of our grocery budget, so keeping fingers crossed we won't need anything this week.

How was your weekend? I've been playing a catch up on loads and loads of laundry and ironing that I couldn't do last week (some pants, skirts and dress shirts). But with today's laundry it all added up, and I spent about two hours just sorting through and ironing. lesson learned: try to stay on top with the laundry :)

I also went through the fridge as I was working on this week's menu. We don't have much food waste but we do have some:

First, we had a few spoons of leftover pasta sauce left in this can. I wanted to use it up this week but, unfortunately, it got moldy :( Also, we threw away some grapes that went bad too. When my MIL came to visit last time, on top of her care package, she also brought about four pounds of grapes for the kids. As much as they love grapes, it turned out to be just too much. And, unfortunately, they don't like grapes frozen...I probably, should've froze them anyway but I never got to it.

And this week we are eating plenty of leftovers. I made a huge batch of soup last Saturday that will be our dinner for today and a couple of lunches throughout the week. And we have a bunch of bits and pieces that really need to be used up. I expect our fridge to be pretty clean and empty by the end of the week:)

So that's what our menu looks like so far:

Mon. - soup
Tues. - leftovers of all sorts
Wed.- potato salad, sausage
Thurs. - salmon, rice, vegetable stir-fry
Fr. - hamburgers, salad
Sat.- breakfast for dinner
Sun.- leftovers/ ravioli with whatever veggies we'll have left by then

And what are you eating this week? And how's your monthly budget shaping up? Are you going to stay below or go over?

  1. As far as frozen grapes go, some people like to use them as ice cubes in their drinks. However, we like to eat them frozen, especially in the summer.

  2. hi! I knew moms who froze grapes and their kids loved them. I never tried that myself.

I always have leftover spaghetti sauce. I freeze it in ziplock bags. Which could be good, but I usually forget I have them in the freezer!

    1. I usually freeze sauce too. But I was thinking of using it and was surprised to see it to get moldy. makes me wonder if somebody used a dirty spoon to get it out...

  3. Lots of rice and beans over here this week .... rice and beans with veggies, bean soup, veggie burgers and so on. I'm just looking at different frugal recipes and coming up with a menu for the month.

  6. I think I'm doing great with food, since I haven't really bought anything while in the midst of moving. But I'm sure once I'm settled, I'll need the extra funds for the essentials (oils, meats, etc)
