A little something I made for myself...

Yesterday I decided to squeeze in a little time for myself...Because of my hypothyroidism, I gained quite a bit of weight over winter. I'm slowly back on track (more on this later) but, unfortunately, most of my clothes just don't fit properly :( I have a full closet and not much to wear. And no money to shop :)

So I thought it was time for me to make something just for myself :) Like this striped maxi skirt:

I'm not much of a seamstress, far from it. The last time I made a skirt was when I was twelve (I think) at my school Home Improvement class. It's been a while...

But this one was so easy! It literally has four cuts, four seams. I'm not good at writing tutorials on sewing (duh!) but here is a pretty good one.

I've had this fabric for a while. I honestly don't even remember where I got it from or why. I had just enough fabric for this project (about 1 1/2 yards), so I had to be careful how I cut it.

I basically cut A-lined silhouette for the skirt by folding the fabric in half and using my measurements (if you make a striped skirt, be sure to carefully match lines together before you start cutting):

The hardest part is measure yourself right. It works so much better to ask somebody to help you out with that. Because I didn't have anyone to help (two munchkins here don't count), I somehow added 1.5 inches when I measured my waist.  When I tried the skirt on half way, it was too big...  yeah I don't know what happened...But hey, it was a pleasant surprise that I'm not as big as I thought at first I was :)

Then I used leftover fabric to cut the top portion. I really wanted to have a "yoga fold" (you know, like on those comfy yoga pants) but I just didn't have enough fabric left:

Then sewed it all together, and it's done!

I know, I still need to press those seams but it's pretty much finished :) I love how comfy and versatile it is:

What do you think? Now I'm itching to go and sew some more...

  1. I like it! You look very pretty. I have fabric and I am too lazy to sew yet...but when you have fabric, in the future it is always like a free item when you finally use it! (I have hypothyroidism too...so I know what you mean! It is just not fair regarding the weight!)

  9. new clothes on a $0 budget! Once a year our Church organize a clothing swap...that's where I do my "shopping". Sometime I find something that can be easily modified to fit me. IT's fun. (far from a seamstress myself)

  10. Great job on the skirt. I haven't sewed clothing in, well, longer than I can remember.

Did you have any problem getting your dr to test you for hypothyroidism? I think I am hypothyroid, but my dr doesn't think the numbers are high enough to do anything about it. Meanwhile, I drag along all day.

  15. Looks great! Cant even tell the difference between the one you made and if you bought the first one. To say you haven't sewn since 12 this is a great job indeed. Make some and sell as well.

  17. Lena, you are so creative. I am quite a bit overweight due to thyroid and other issues, and I would kill for a slim body such as yours :) You look great!!

  18. You look smashing Lena....very smart. Long skirts suit you and I love the combination of shoes and flower brooch. You are an attractive lady....so you are :-)
Your hypothyroidism must be quite minimal because I cannot see you are overweight. I have "lazy thyroids"(colloquial version of hypothyroidism) diagnosed 6 years ago and I've never been so fat in all my life. Mind you I'm a tad bit older than you and in the menopause so that doesn't help either.

    keep well

    Amanda :-)
