The first fruit of the land...

I finally started getting a little crop from our garden:

Our first zucchini, tomatoes, radishes and some herbs. It's so nice to add homegrown veggies to our salads right now. We had a couple of weeks of warm weather and really nice rain, and some of our plants almost exploded. Seriously! Especially our zucchinis. They literally doubled in size. I picked up these three and two more for my friends, and I'll have at least five more by the end of this week, and, probably, five to seven more by the end of next week.

I see a lot of grilled zucchini and canning in my near future :) Do you have a little/big garden? How's your garden doing this year?

  1. Oh those look good, love fresh homegrown veggies!
We live in a homeowners association so we can't have a real garden but we use one of the flower beds as a tiny makeshift garden & it works great. We have 2 tomato plants, 1 pepper & 1 zucchini. Should start getting things in about a week.

    1. Oh, that's bad that they wouldn't let you to have a small garden but I'm glad that you make it work and will get your own little crop soon :)

  2. This is the first year that I put in a large garden instead of pretty flowers. We can't eat flowers. My eggplant and zucchini seem to be thriving, my beans are just really starting but the tomato's seem slow. I think it has been all the heat and truthfully I am new to this whole garden thing. When I think of the gardens my grandparents put in I feel so ashamed that I haven't been doing this all along.

    1. My tomatoes are slow too. This orange cherry tomato plant is the only one that's thriving. The rest are not doing as good. I have some green tomatoes but they take forever. Last year by now I was already harvesting plenty!

  10. Oh, do post any recipes you have in mind for zucchs. I have never really cooked with them, but the landlord handed me one and I am clueless about it. Besides some strange stirfry that I'd rather not experiment with. Your vegetables look great!

    1. My vegan zucchini bread comes to mind :) I like baked zucchini chips or grilled (you can use the same recipe to bake them too).

  11. I have two tomato plants coming up. I planted the seed thinking they'd never do anything as they were so old and a lots of flower and herb seeds. Well the tomato seeds are the only thing that grew. They are about 8 inches high now. I will be transplanting them into bigger pots this week.

Your zucchini look beautiful. I like to make a zucchini gratin that layers long zucchini slices with a bit of milk or cream and a sprinkling of parm/romano. It's really a nice substitute for a meat entree because it has enough richness and flavor.

  12. When my kids were younger, they like to grow zucchinis to watch them get big. Sometimes they were bigger than they were.

  13. I *love* chocolate chip zucchini bread, zucchini cookies, breaded & baked zucchini "chips". . . yum! We have had blueberries so far (although the birds ate quite a few of them before I could get outside to pick them) & our tomato plants are *enormous*, but no tomatoes yet. We tend to get tomatoes very late in the summer, due to our short growing season.

Jealous of your radishes! LOVE them in salads.

    1. Mmm, blueberries. My tiny blueberry bush has a handful of berries on it but they are super-tiny. I think, it's too hot for blueberries here :(

  16. My radishes didn't turn out this year. So far I've eaten from my garden: spinach, lettuce, onions, beets, peas, and zucchini. I like zucchini but I'm not always sure how to make it. If you would post recipes, that would be great. I just love gardening.
