Rest in peace, Grandma, rest in peace...

I could never imagine that this January would be full of such tragic losses for my family. But two nights ago, in the middle of the night, my Mom called and told me that my wonderful, kind and life-loving Grandma had passed away. She was only 75...

She passed away from swelling and fluid in her brain. They aren't sure what caused it but her passing was quick. She started feeling sick early in the morning (there in Russia) and before my Dad could even get there, she was already gone... My Grandma worked as an ER surgeon for more than 40 years but surprisingly did not like doctors and going to them. About 6 years ago she had a stroke and it possibly created a blood clot in her brain that could've led to her death eventually. We would never know the true reason but it gives us a little consolation that she didn't suffer for long...

My darling Grandma, I'm going to miss you so much. I can't believe you are gone... We were very close. When I was little, I would spend the whole summer with her and often felt like she was the same age as me and my best friend. The lessons she taught me in life helped me to become the woman I am today. She had seen a lot of trials and suffering in her days but she was deeply loved.

My dear friend and my companion in many mischiefs, as you enter your new heavenly home, may you rest in peace for which you truly deserve... Our memories and your laughter will always be stored deeply in my heart. I know we'll meet again, on the other side of the veil, and I will hug you and hold you in my arms just like you always did for me...

I love you, Granny. God be with you 'till we meet again...

  3. Hello Lena,

I follow your blog but rarely post. I am so sorry for the losses you have had this month and the trials of the last year. So good you were prepared and able to make your quick trip back to see family in the fall. Know that others think of you and your family.

    1. Teresa, thank you so much for your kindness! I'm eternally grateful that I had the opportunity to see her last year. I called her on the 1st of January, and we talked for almost an hour. I'm grateful that I could say my last good byes and have a few laughs with her before she was gone... I will miss her greatly!

  7. sorry to hear Lena. My grandma is in the same situation right now, with swelling and fluid in her brain, due to a fall last week. She is at home in a "pre-coma" on a ventilator, and doctors said there is nothing they can do. She is almost 99 years old

  20. I'm sorry for your loss. But she sounded like she lived life right. I once read "people are born crying while everyone else is smiling; live your life in a way that when you go, you will be smiling while others will be crying". Rest in peace, kind lady.

  23. My Grandmother is one of the most important people in my life. She is 83, my Grandfather will turn 90 this year. They need some help from time to time with a bigger cleaning or shopping but they are still independent, they can go out, see the doctor on their own, buy a newspaper, call us, etc. It is so great, isn't it? I know and I am very thankful for that. But even when I know that, it is so hard to imagine my life without them. I live in France now, 1300km from Poland where they stay. It is still in the Europe so I can come back to Warsaw often. I did that in November, I went for Christmas in December, I spent some days at home when I had my exams in Jan as well. So I can see them often, right? But every day I think about them. And this 1300km is not a distance any more, it is just a size of this hole in my heart. As I said, I'm grateful for this good health they have and I always try to concentrate on positive things. But last Christmas I had this kind of reflection: "Dear God, please let us gather together next year with all people sitting around the table like it is today". Lena, I'm reading your post now, I didn't check bloglovin in last days. It is 8.30am here in France. 21st and 22nd Jan are days when we have "Grandma's and Grandpa's Day" in Poland. It is today and tomorrow. When I will be calling my Grandma, I will keep your Grandma in my heart and thoughts. My heart goes to you!
