Food waste and a menu, week 6/2-6/8

Hello everyone!

How has your Monday been? A typical Monday or was it actually a pleasant day? My Mondays are pretty boring and predictable most of the time. And that includes piles and piles of laundry... Considering we have 3 flights of stairs in the house, I can always squeeze some exercising too :) Feeling super-tired but pretty accomplished today...

I was really hoping to avoid food waste this week. The past few weeks weren't very good for us. But alas, this week went down the drain (or in this case, down into the garbage can) too. First we had this:

This orange looked perfect on the outside but, unfortunately, nasty and gross on the inside... Sorry for the dark picture. It was supposed to be an evening snack :)

I also had a can of mixed fruit from the dent area of the store that was apparently dented too much... That's the risk you sometimes take while trying to save a penny...

I did go shopping for this week today, and now our fridge is pretty full. It was getting kind of sad at the end of May... So this week on our menu (order is subject to change, as always):

Mon- pasta Alfredo, leftover baked beans, salad
Tues.- zucchini pasta (I really need to update pictures for this recipe...)
Wed. - IKEA dinner (need to go get a couple of things, and it's $10 night for a family of 4)
Thurs. - mashed potatoes, meatballs, mixed veggies
Fr.- plov, whatever veggies we have in the fridge by then
Sat.- chicken salad (we just top lettuce with leftover chicken from the freezer, other veggies, our favorite dressing and sprinkle with mozzarella. Yum! It's our family's favorite!)
Sun.- pot roast/leftovers

And what are you eating this week?

  1. Your zucchini pasta looks good! When I go to the store later this week I am going to check out the price of zucchini and keep this recipe in mind! :)
Our meals this week include meatloaf and mashed potatoes, homemade pizza topped with whatever needs to be used up in the fridge, rice and beans, chicken and veggies, and lots of leftovers ("Buffet Night at Home!) :)

  3. It's so annoying to find your last orange like this when you have been looking forward to it, (I love oranges) I sometimes fin onions like this too.

  4. Yuck to that orange!

Your meal plan looks lovely Lena - I didn't post mine this week, but we're having much the same as last week.

  5. I always considered having the washer and dryer in the basement forced exercise and not an inconvenience. However, my knee has been bothering me so I'm rethinking the whole idea.

    1. I try to convince myself that it's a good thing but after a long day chasing the kids it can become a daunting chore... I'm sorry, your knee is hurting!!

  6. You must make your chicken salad like we do in Pittsburgh, with French fries on top too. For a long time I didn't realize everybody did not do that,!

    1. I lived a little south of Pittsburgh for a while and I never heard of French fries on top of chicken salad. Sounds good.

  7. Oranges and lemon that are spoiled are great for the garbage disposal. They will take the nasty funk smell out, unless they are really rotten.
