Today was a good day...oh, and menus and food waste too:)

I rarely say it but today was a pretty good day! First, I woke up to find out that my blog went over 100000 views. I know it's not a lot for many people but it's a very exciting milestone for me. Thank you all, my friends, for your support and that you take time from your very busy schedule to stop by here.

Then I found out that Sarah at Thrifty Decor Chick mentioned our frugal master closet makeover. Sarah is super-talented and her house is beautiful, so I was honored that she mentioned it. Because of that I also had an all-time record number of page views in one day:

Pageviews yesterday -1,268

I know these are just silly statistics, and don't mean much but I was still pretty stoked about it.

Oh well, I'm done. Sorry about the bragging today! I'm just a little excited here. But back to the regular program now:) Oh, and I also got a $140 Valentine's gift for Hubby for only $25. I might have to wait to tell you more about it (because my husband reads this blog too) but I promise I'll share with you what I got in a couple weeks :)

So it was an overall beautiful day! And did I mention that the temperature outside was in positive double digits, and it's nice and sunny outside. I'm so going to jinx this awesome day...
OK, the only food waste we had today was two lonely tomatoes:

I don't exactly know how it happened but I think, they froze at some point. I got a couple of pounds of tomatoes and they all seemed the same but these two became mushy and gross a couple days later.

I tried to do a two-week shopping trip last Friday. It didn't work that well. I combed through the pantry and the fridge ( and the diaper stock) to see what we might need, and I thought I wrote down everything. But three days later I already started a new list of things we needed, and I actually had to go to the store today to buy dishwasher detergent. All you, ladies, who do bi-weekly and especially once a month shopping - you are amazing! I want to be like you when I grow up:)

Overall, we should have enough basics to last us for two weeks but I will definitely need to buy some produce, milk and, maybe, bread (I hope to have enough time this week to bake it myself). So this week we are eating:

Mon.- taco soup, corn bread
Tues.- sticky chicken drumsticks, mashed potatoes, broccoli
Wed.- chicken and cream cheese taquitos (sounds really good)
Thurs.- spinach pizza
Fr.- Birthday party with the family
Sat.- leftovers (if there are any) or hot dogs with sweet potato fries
Sun.- vegetable soup with homemade bread/ fettuccine alfredo with salad

What are you eating this week? And do you do anything special for Valentine's Day? Do you celebrate at all, do you go out or stay at home and cook something yummy?

  1. I do my shopping once a month..sometimes every three weeks but usually once a month. I make sure that I keep a list on the fridge of everything we are out of or only have one left of. I do pop into the store if they are having a really good sale and it is something that we really need or just to good to pick up - like ground meat for 1.99lb then my moms senior citizen discount - I am not afraid to trot out mom for a discount :). Eventually it gets easier. I started by going every two weeks, then three and now pretty much once a month.

But believe me if its the can can sale or another good one I go. But even though there are 6-7 people here they are all adults so I don't have to worry about formula or diapers.

I think you are rocking this whole blog...I remember when I first found your blog I think there were only a few of us! Your kicking hiney!

    1. Yeah, exactly, I want to be you when I grow up :) I'm definitely going to try to shop bi-weekly again. I think I just need to have a better list of what I have on hand and work with it!

    1. You still have time to create a menu, right? The week barely started :)

  5. Oh my, you're right. Those chicken and cream cheese taquitos sound REALLY good. You must post pictures if you make them! Tomatoes are usually something that goes bad... that and cucumbers, but before they even think about spoiling them, I dice them up and throw in scrambled eggs. Cucumbers have no such luck, sadly... though who said you can't have scrambled eggs with diced cucumbers? Hmm...

    1. I will :) We rarely have tomatoes going bad (I try to sneak veggies everywhere :), and I only got these a couple of days ago :( That's what's sad! And as for cucumbers, I LOVE them. I often eat them just sliced with a pinch of salt, a splash of olive oil and a few drops lemon juice. Yummy!

  6. I started making my own dishwasher detergent, so I don't have to go to the store for that anymore. I'm still working on only shopping once a week like I did when my kids were younger. I'll have to look at your closet makeover. Congrats on making 100,000.

    1. I need your recipe. Does it work well? I'm thinking about trying to make my own dishwasher detergent too but it's still on my mile long to-do list.

  7. Congratulations on the milestone!! My hope is to eventually graduate to once a month shopping, but man, it's tough! With our budget, I can barely make it one week! Your menu looks great. I need to start branching out, but I keep sticking with the basics. Hamburger steak, spaghetti, baked chicken, etc. Tonight we're having free pizza from Papa John's for winning the Super Bowl coin toss!! Again, congratulations!

  9. So funny, Lena! I just made those Chicken and cream cheese taquitos yesterday. They are really yummy! I think I put a little more cream cheese, so they were a bit too creamy. Nevertheless, they were delicious! If you have left-overs, they will taste like Russian thin blini with filling. Also good! Your blog inspires me to have less food waste weekly, so a lot of the times I will switch my menu to use up stuff that my need to be used. Great job with blogging :)

  10. Congrats Lena! That's a lot of page views! Your menu looks delicious. Yeah, two week shopping is tough. I always forget a few things too. OR, I run out of bananas on the third day and don't want to wait until I go for a full shop again. I guess it takes practice.

    1. I know. I think I will run out of bananas and yogurt the most when I finally commit to two week shopping :) I'm already getting low on cereal too but I hope we can still stretch it for another week.
