Food waste and menu, week 4/22- 4/28

Hello, hello! How's your Monday going? Today is Earth Day here in the US. I saw this saying somewhere yesterday and I just had to re-post:

(if I saw it on your blog, please, please, let me know. I have a brain freeze and can't remember where I saw it first :)

So how am I celebrating Earth Day this week? Well, first by not having food waste again this week! Seriously, people, I can't believe it but we haven't thrown away any food in six weeks!! I don't know how it happened but I'm pretty happy about it :)

Second, I'm going to stay away from the stores as much as possible (you know, so I have less food waste this week too :). But seriously, I only have $12 left in our food budget, and if I want to achieve one of our monthly goals (aka stay within the budget), and that's our milk money. Granted, we are nicely stocked and don't really need anything. I think, it's very doable for us to spend no more than $12 in the next 8 days (oh what am I saying...wish me luck!!)

We also have a BBQ with friends on Saturday, and we are bringing two salads. But I have all the ingredients on hand, so we are good. Otherwise, this is what we plan on eating this week:

Mon. - plov, cabbage salad
Tues.- chicken noodle soup
Wed.-Au gratin potatoes, broccoli
Thurs.- pork chops, cous cous, mixed veggies
Fr.- pasta, salad
Sat.- BBQ with friends
Sun.- leftovers/ breakfast for dinner

What's on your menu this week?

  1. Good luck with your food budget for the rest of them month. I don't know about around there, but $12 will only buy a couple of gallons of milk around here. Anyway, I feel success coming your way.

    1. A gallon of milk costs about $2.50-2.75 here but when I'm lucky I can find it for about $2. I actually still have two gallons of milk in our fridge, and I really hope to stretch it until the end of the month. But we'll see...

  2. I think you'll be just fine for the remaining of the month. Good job! I haven't had food waste for a few months (I haven't been eating a whole lot either!). Good luck.

    1. I hope so. It's a lot harder to stretch your budget when you have two picky kids here :) But I'll try :)

  3. Congratulations on your lack of food waste. I never even thought about it before I started reading your blog, but now I feel guilty every time I see lettuce browning at me when I open the fridge door. How do you deal with veggie excess? You know when you have to buy a whole bunch of celery, but your recipe only calls for 2 or 3 stalks?

    1. Marti, I rarely have excess. Now that we are hooked on green smoothies, everything goes in :) But to be honest, I grew up in a vegetarian household. For about ten years my parents were vegetarians, so we ate a ton of veggies. Now, even though we all eat meat again, I still constantly make stir-fries, salads and soups, and try to use up all the bits and pieces. As for celery, I don't buy it very often because the boys don't like it but when I do, first, I store it wrapped tightly in aluminum foil in the fridge. This way it stays fresh for a few weeks. I also chop some of it with onions and freeze them for soups and stews. Honestly, the freezer is my best friend :) I'm also thinking of investing in a dehydrator this summer. I have friends who swear by it, and it will help our produce last even longer!
