Sour cream orange vanilla cake recipe.

As promised, here's the recipe for the "Sour cream orange vanilla cake". My Mom used to make something similar many moons ago, and I really missed it. So when I wanted to make a delicious dessert for my family yesterday, this cake came to mind.

You will need:

  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 cup sugar
  • Zest and juice of one orange (reserve 2 TB juice for a drizzle)
  • 1 stick butter, melted
  • 2 TB sour cream
  • 1 3/4 cup flour
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1/2 tsp. soda+ 2 tsp apple cider vinegar.

For orange drizzle:

  • 2 TB orange juice
  • 2 TB sugar powder
  • 2 TB water

Heat your oven to 350 F. Lightly grease and flour a 1 1/2-quart loaf pan and set aside. You can also use a bundt form for this cake.

For juicing an orange, I use this thing:

People, it's awesome. It only costs about $5 but works miracles. You literally get all the juice out of your orange. But, of course, you could use store-bought orange juice too. And don't forget to put those leftover peels through your disposal to fill your kitchen with even more orange aroma :)

Whisk butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time and beat well. Add sour cream and vanilla.

In a tea cup mix soda with vinegar, then add it to your egg mixture. Combine it with orange juice, and whisk into egg mixture.

Sift flour, combine everything and beat with a mixer on medium for about 1 minute.

Pour into your prepared form and bake for about 60 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean (less if you make a bundt cake).

Remove the cake from the oven and allow it to cool for 10 minutes in the pan.  Then invert onto a plate. Mix the ingredients for your drizzle and...well, drizzle over your cake while it's still warm :)

Let it cool completely and enjoy with a scoop of vanilla ice-cream or just a glass of milk.

  1. Oh, that looks even better than the first sneak photo of it. I love moist cakes like that. And that juicer is quite unique. Have never seen one like it.

  2. how much sour cream? I didn't see it in the ingredient list. I want to try to make a dessert that has sour cream, I heard it keeps the cake moist

  5. I LOVE a citrus flavored cake. This sounds especially nice with the orange which doesn't have the sharp tang of lemon that my husband finds a little harsh.

Thank you too for commenting on my blog this week. Your blog was one of my bookmarked faves that got lost when FireFox went phooey on me. I could only remember "Lena" and "Frugal" but not the full name. I'm taking a friend's advice and saving my fave bookmarked sites in my email!
