Why I don't update on my yearly goals any more....

You all know that I'm a very goal-oriented and a list-making person. And those of you who have been with me long enough, know that I create yearly goals every New Year. And try to work on them.

But not this year. It's been a while since I updated. I actually looked through my goals yesterday and smiled. So many things have changed since January. So many things are not important any more...

I did achieve some of these goals. I finally joined Facebook (please like me if you haven't already. Thank you!!). It took me a looong time. We also keep working on organizing our lives and cutting food waste.

But most of these goals became irrelevant, especially due to recent changes in our lives. And others, like reading 50 books this year, just seem funny now. I doubt I will read that many books but, honestly, I stopped counting months ago. Who cares how many I've read as long as I enjoy reading? I don't know what I was thinking when I created this goal. I'm not going to push myself to read more books just to achieve a certain amount. I'm gonna do it because I love it :)

Now I want to concentrate on small goals. Short and sweet. Mostly, on how to live from one week to another. I want to be able to progress and push myself but not for the sake of reaching some magic number.

Has it ever happened to you that you created certain goals/resolutions that you wanted to achieve and then realized that they don't really make sense any more?

  1. Completely understand where you are coming from Lena. I've had to do the same as well.

Things happen that affect our plans and/or our intentions. The smart thing to do is adjust or you will just end up failing.

I love the approach you are taking but never forget that dream goal that inspires you.

    1. Never :) It might just take a little longer to get there :)

  2. I haven't kept a lot of my New Years goals either. It's been a crazy year. One of my goals was to read all the Sunday School curriculum, for example. I've only made it to SS 4 times this year. I don't even know what they're studying anymore. So, yes, I relate. I've got some summer goals--mostly stuff I want to do or have to do for the kids.

    1. I understand! I don't know much about Sunday School curriculum either :) But know quite a bit about Primary :)

  3. I had my life plan in place then something happened that turned everything upside down. In that moment, I had more clarity than I've ever had in my life. Everything changed including my goals and I am so glad it did.

    1. You and me both :) I hope, there is something great in store for all of us in this time of uncertainty.

  4. I didn't make yearly goals this year... I much prefer monthly goals. They're far more realistic in my case & tend to be more aimed at whatever is going on that month rather than 11 months into the future. ;)

    1. I think I start liking monthly goals better too. But not in June :) Until we get the answers, it will be more like weekly goals for us :)

  5. I think goals are important, if for no other reason than to get you to think about what's important to you. However, things are always changing, so your goals will too. You are very smart to realize that.

    1. Thank you :) It's just time to have shorter goals for us, and I'm OK with this :)

  6. I don't make goals because I find that stresses me. So I just keep my goals at what cleaning or cooking I am going to do for the day, as they are necessities. Things that aren't, like sewing or doing an extra home project, I might buy the materials, but if I don't feel like doing it anymore, I put them away, because I know I can always come back to them. And that time might come when I don't have extra money, but here I already have the materials.

I have also learned to drop things that I have a habit of doing each year after year, like touring a museum, going to a certain store once a year. I decided enough is enough...sometimes I can just have those memories without recreating them.

I think I am just getting old!

    1. No! You just works for you in this stage of life :) I had to drop quite a few things I used to do over the years, especially after kids came along :) I think, goals are for us to achieve something and not limit us. When they become to much of a burden or just not relevant, they need to be tweaked :)

  7. Yup... been there, done that (repeatedly). I did start my reading goal because I haven't been reading... before college, I was someone who'd read tons of books. During and after college, that number dropped to zero (outside of textbooks, of course). So to force myself to start again, I put a number on it. So far so good. I still don't love-love it, but getting there to enjoy it. Other goals were more like you said... "what was I thinking?" I scrapped one and it wasn't even February yet. I think it's important to have long term goals, but not all of them are important or critical. Changing/realigning them as time goes on helps a lot too.

    1. You know, yearly goals worked great for me last year but this time around life just changes too quickly. I think, your reading goal makes total sense, mine on the other hand - not so much :)

  8. I totally get it! I myself make these like vague year plans on my birthday (because that happens to be in jan. anyway) that are really more the areas I want to focus on; patience, health, stuff like that. Goals aer way easier for me on the monthly basis and when they are shorter, you are so right!

And rock on with your book reading self! As long as you are reading, who cares how many or even what it is! :)

    1. Yes, I think I will stick with monthly goals for a while (or, maybe, from now on:)

  9. Sometimes I think that we just overload ourselves. We push so hard to get everything done and we should be trying just to get some down time and enjoy our lives.
