Food waste and a menu, week 11/4-11/10.

Yesterday we woke up to this view out of the window:

The crazy thing about it is the day before my kids were jumping on the trampoline for a couple of hours in almost T-shirts... I'm trying to convince myself that I'm excited for winter but I already miss California weather with the beautiful humidity and toasty sunshine. Ahhh....

I'm grumpy today due to being slightly under the weather. That, or I ate something yesterday because I feel like I'm not gonna hold my breakfast (my one and only meal today) much longer. And no, I'm not pregnant!! :) It's just an overall yucky feeling, and it's hard to think of food and menus, period.

Luckily, I created our menu yesterday. I had to tweak it a bit because I wasn't about to cook today but I hope to follow it for the rest of the week. We have a Church dinner occasion that I'm helping with on Saturday and the boys will have dinner with Hubby's family. Other than that, we are staying in and staying warm:

Mon. - leftover tacos from yesterday for the boys
Tues.- borscht (Russian beet soup)
Wed.- zucchini pasta (using up the last zucchini from our garden)
Thurs.- salmon in tomato sauce, steamed rice, vegetable stir-fry
Fr. - plov with salad
Sat. - Church/family dinner
Sun.- cutlets, mashed potatoes, green beans

I need the fixings for the salad, otherwise we already have everything on hand. Oh, and as for food waste, I did throw away two avocados. I'm the only person in the family who eats them, and I just didn't before our vacation, oh well.

And what's on your menu this week? And those of you with kids/grandkids, how do you deal with picky children?

  1. Feel better! And my goodness, yes, it feels too earlier for snow.

I wish I had a tried and true answer for picky eaters. My boys have both gone through picky phases. My daughter eats everything; we hope all she eats is actually food. :) I was really fretting about their lack of eating, but the doctor told me to not worry so much if they don't eat the same amount every day. Somedays they aren't as hungry as other days and they usually even out by the end of the week. As longer as they aren't losing weight that is. Picky eaters are tricky; good luck!

    1. Mine are actually doing OK lately :) It's more of a social study I'm conducting for the upcoming post.

  3. Oh man, I don't think I'd be ready to see that outside my window yet! No one else but me eats avocados either in our house. They aren't picky generally speaking, but do start to get picky with some specific items.

  4. We have none of that *stuff* yet.... but I see lots of photos.... I assume it won't be too long till it reaches us! We have had a lot of rain lately though, today was pretty mild here, almost 12c I think! No menu plan in place yet, but I should 'cause tomorrow I may do my grocery shopping!! Have a great week, hope you're feeling better!

  5. Lena, what state do you live in? I'm happy your boys got to jump on the trampoline one last time before winter hit. Perhaps the serenity of the snow will bring peace to not feeling well.

    1. We live in Northern UT. It's a gorgeous place to live in, we are surrounded by mountains everywhere but the weather changes are not for everyone!

  6. I had one son who would eat everything and one who was picky. As I learned to ask the right questions, it turns out it was often the texture that was the problem more than the taste. For example, he always said that he didn't like spaghetti. I figured that he didn't like the tomato sauce. Turns out he didn't like the long, skinny spaghetti noodles, Once we started using penne instead of spaghetti, he was fine with it. So I would suggest that you experiment with different kinds of food, colors, textures, arrangements, spices, and tastes. And every few weeks try a food again that he didn't like before. Their tastes often change as they grow.

    1. You made a great point about textures! I've never though of it before.

  7. snowing?? I am definitely not a lover of cold and snowy weather. One thing (maybe the only one) that I like about cold weather is that I can have one night a week soup, and another night pizza...hot weather makes me not wanting to turn the over on

    1. I know :) In summer I heavily rely on salads. We eat quite a bit of soup during colder season too - Russian beet soup is on the menu this week :)

  8. It is pretty to look at, but I don't think I could live where it snows. :-)

  9. Oh. My gosh. Totally jealous of the snow! Ooh, how envious I am. Feel better soon and enjoy the weather for us snowless people.

  10. I am dreading getting that white stuff here....LOL...

As far as dealing with picky eaters...I wish I had some answers, but I don't. Mainly I just let them be picky on some things, but not others. And I just keep offering them food (maybe putting only a tsp on their plate at a time).
