In a week or so my 1st grader will have his 100th day of school. So their teacher gave them an assignment to create a project that includes 100 items arranged in tens of the same objects. She also encouraged them to come up with their own idea for the project. Guess, what my kiddo came up with (and what I spent a good chunk of my day over the weekend, helping him print, and cut, and glue!)??
As you can see, my 7-year old is a little addicted to his new Skylanders Swapforce game for Wii that he got for Christmas. I really limit his time spent playing video games but he's surely at this age that he's getting more and more interested in all kinds of gaming "monstrosities" :)
But at least we had a great time working on his project together while sharing quite a few laughs. The moments like this make life worth living and truly special...
When my son was your son's age, he didn't have any video games. It took me a little while, but I finally figured out that he was picking all of his friends by who had a video game that he could go to their house to play. Video games are a lot of fun especially for boys. It sounds like a lot of fun cutting and pasting with your son.

DeleteThat is awesome! You have to love school projects like that. Rebecca (who is also in first grade) has to bring in 100 pieces of the same snack. I think they are going to make trail mix or something like that. She will probably want to take M&Ms. :)

DeleteI've heard a lot about Skylanders. He's a gamer through and through. Good for him! I have always been a gamer (more in my younger days than I am now), so having something you can really relate and like beats counting apples and pears. That would've probably been me with Pokemons!
ReplyDeleteI'm definitely trying to tame his gaming tendencies, and I'm picky at what he can play :) But I don't mind a little fun because I'd rather let him play home where I can see what he's doing than do who knows what at friends' houses.
DeleteVideo games are here to stay, so it's nice that your son is using his creativity to blend his game interest with a little crafting. My four sons all enjoyed gaming to a lesser of greater degree. I believe as long as other activities are in the picture, there's no harm in some time spent at the computer or console, and some studies show that time in front of the screen does have benefits for children's learning :)

ReplyDeleteMy son is really into hockey. Last year when he was in Kindergarten, for his 100th day project, he did hockey cards. He even divided it into the 2 divisions and did 50 on each side of an ice rink he drew. It was really cool. He is also 7 and just getting into Skylanders Swapforce on the family's PS3.
