Food waste and a menu, week 11/12-11/18

Now that my parents returned back home, I'm trying to get this house back in order :) I did 7 loads of laundry today and an enormous amount of ironing. But the biggest chore was to clean the fridge...

Every time when my parents come, I plan a nice menu. And every time they go to the store by themselves, which they do all the time, they buy and buy and buy food!! Honestly, I'm not against it (well, it does cut our grocery bill a bit) but the problem is that our fridge is not very big and my Dad doesn't usually check what we have before he goes grocery shopping. Hence I have 7 different kinds of bread in the fridge or pantry right now. And it's mostly good stuff aka no preservatives, so I know it will go bad fairly soon. What do you do when you have too much bread (other than freezing it)? What do you do if some of it is dark rye bread?

So until this morning our fridge was so full of little baggies, Tupperware bowls and bits and pieces of different leftovers that I had no idea what we actually had. So I had to do some major inspection. Luckily, it wasn't as bad as the picture above. But I did find something really gross on the bottom of the produce bin:

If you are wondering what this is, it's a very gross (like really really bad!) cantaloupe. It was actually the last one from our small garden harvest. They weren't very good but we ate them anyway...until this one got lost under some other stuff. And I also threw away half a lemon that I planned to use for lemon water but never did. Oh well... At least, that's the extent of the damage this time around.

We ate quite a bit of leftovers for lunch today and we'll have more tomorrow too. Otherwise, this week we are eating:

Mon.- pizza and a salad
Tues.- soup
Wed.- fried rice and ham
Thurs.- leftovers
Fr.- breakfast for dinner
Sat.- TBD (vegetarian burritos?)
Sun.- pork roast, mashed potatoes, salad

Are you eating anything yummy this week?

  1. I bought six romaine lettuce hearts this week as they were on sale for $3.99, three romaine hearts were $3, so I guess we'll be eating soemthing with romaine lettuce all week!!

    1. I guess so :) I found a huge bag of romaine in a produce bin yesterday, so lots of salad for lunch for me this week too :)

  2. You can always make bread crumbs out of the extra bread before it goes bad. That can be frozen in smaller packets and then you just take out a bag once a week. Use this to thicken soups and stew and to mix with cheese to top casseroles. I also mix this in with mushed up beans, eggs and veggies to make veggie burgers -- or you could use it in meatloaf and regular burgers too.

At the worst, feed it to the birds!

    1. I usually freeze white and wheat bread but I have two loaves of dark rye bread, and there is no way we can eat it before it goes bad. But feeding birds is a great idea :)

  3. Next time you have half a lemon, slice it up and put them in an ice cube tray, cover with water. Lemon ice when you want it :)

    1. What an awesome idea, thank you! I just kept debating with myself if I want to use it for baking or for lemon water, and I just forgot all about it :)

  4. I use stale bread for croutons and bread crumbs. I have a lot of recipes that include bread crumbs :)

    1. I use lots of bread crumbs too. But I haven't made my own croutons in a longest while.

  5. Good idea from Ashley--croutons for the rye bread. With all of that food in your fridge, you didn't really well to not have any more waste than you did.

  6. I am so like your Dad. I can't help but buy things for our grown DD's fridge and they live local. I think it is a parent thing, we think we should always feed our kiddo's

  7. I've used lemons that are no good for cooking, for cleaning, so that they don't count as food waste!

  8. I would have frozen the rye bread. It makes great stuffing for Thanksgiving.
