Food waste Monday and a menu, week 4/30-5/6

Pin It   Wow, I can't believe today is the last day of April! Where did the whole month go? I can't complain-this month was good for us, even with some bumps along the road. I'll post my yearly and some monthly updates tomorrow.
So today is my last update on food waste for the month. I do have a bit of food waste but IT'S NOT MY FAULT! I made some scrambled eggs with bacon for Hubby. He likes to wrap it in a tortilla and eat it for breakfast. So I made him some to last for a week. And he had about half a cup left. He promised to eat it but never did. Instead, I found the Tupperware with eggs on the very back of the fridge :( So here it goes:

I guess, he got tired of scrambled eggs. Sorry for the terrible picture. I took it late in the evening. I don't know exactly how much money we "wasted" here, I would say no more than 50c.
But at least it's the only waste we have. We do need need to finish up some bits and pieces of leftovers but it shouldn't be too hard.
And my menu for this week:

Mon.-BBQ chicken wraps
Tues.-vegetable lasagna
Wed.-fillet mignon, smashed potatoes, salad
Thurs-leftovers
Fr-eating out (Hubby's official graduation ceremony)
Sat-tomato soup/grilled cheese sandwiches
Sun-beef stir-fry, brown rice

 Total spent this month :$291.34
Total saved: $158.95
Left to spend this month: $0
YTD spending: $1133.21
YTD savings: $666.88
YTD coupons used: 145
YTD waste: $30.27

The Inspire Me Sundays

Pin It  I was thinking a lot about it and I decided that I'm not going to post anything frugal or anything about money at all on Sundays. Sunday is a day of rest and spiritual worship for my family. So I think at least this year I will instead post a quote that inspires me. And if you have any quotes or stories that inspire you, please send them all my way, and you might be featured in the upcoming posts.
I'm going to call it The Inspire Me Sundays.

"The three great essentials to achieve anything worth while are, first, hard work; second, stick-to-itiveness; third, common sense."

Shopping trips this week...weeks?

Pin It    I just realized that I haven't posted any shopping trips in a few weeks. I still have all my numbers just not the pictures. We actually overspent this month but I feel OK about it. We got some canned stuff, a 5 lbs. bag of cheese, lots of other stuff we needed and, best of all, I went to the Russian store and got some of my native food. So as of  Apr. 23rd (Monday of this week) we spent $240.88, saved $88.96 and used 31 coupon. This week we went to Walmart and Smiths. We actually went to Smiths 3 times. here's why- this week Smiths is running a great General Mills cereal sale-if you buy for, you get it for $1.49 each. In reality, not all of the cereal was $1.49-some were more, some (like Honey nut cheerios) were less. And here we were down to 2 boxes of cerel, one opened. So this was a great cereal for us.At first, I only wanted to buy 4 boxes but then I decided to go back and buy more. Also one of my friends from MO sent me 3 amazing coupons for $3 off any beef, ham, chicken that were expiring 04/30/12, so I wanted to take advantage of them too. So these are my trips:

 Walmart trip #1:

Had free coupons for any dole salad and Coffee-Mate (I use it with my PERO drink...Yum!). I also did plenty of price-matching (don't remember all of the details right now).
Total spent : $ 9.82
Total saved: $ 9.40
Coupons used: 4

Smiths trip #1:

I had some good coupons for cereal  so I spent 49c-75c per box. Juice was $1.24-1.49 ea after some Smiths coupons.

Total spent: $9.76
Total saved: $16.16
Coupons used: 5

Smiths trip #2:

This time cereal was a little more expensive (was out of all very good coupons) but still no more than $1. I also got Clausen pickles for $1.99 on clearance (my favorite) and some chicken tenders for $3.29- $3 chicken coupon=29c!!!

Total spent : $10.46
Total saved: 15.99
Coupons used: 3

Smiths trip #3 and Walmart trip #2 (combined picture):

I really wanted to use my last meat coupon from my friend, so I stopped by Smiths again (we were in that area) and they had some steak on clearance for $3.86 down from $6.83, used $3 coupon=86c for almost 2 lbs of nice thin steak!! I also noticed a couple more things on clearance rack.

So total spent: $3.52
Total saved: $9.40
Coupons used: 2

And at Walmart I went specifically for some feminine stuff. I cleaned my coupons yesterday and found 1 Carefree $1/1 coupon and 1 $2/2 Stayfree coupon that were expiring on Monday. I also have a $5 rebate of any 2 Stayfree packs.
So I got 1 carefree- 94c-$1 c=6 c MM
2 Stayfree- 2.86 ea-$2/2 c=$3.72- $5 rebate=$1.28 MM
I also used my last meat coupon and got more chicken for 49c. I have friends over tonight so it was perfect timing for some meat here :). And I got yet another cereal box :) Rancho Market had Honey Bunches of oats on sale for $1.99, used $1 c from Facebook=99c. Now we should be set with cereal for 6 months or so (hopefully!!). And I price-matched some produce:
oranges-6lbs/99c (price-m. to Rancho Market)
cucumbers- 8 $99c (price-m. to Rancho too)
watermelon- 4lbs/99c, seedless( also Rancho)-for dinner with friends

Total spent: $16.90
Total saved; $19.04
Coupons used: 6

So here's what the damage is this week:
Total spent this week-$50.46
Total saved this week-$69.99!!
Coupons used- 20

Total spent this month : $291.34 ($34.34 over budget-still had $7 from last month)
Total saved: $158.95
Left to spend this month: $0
YTD spending: $1133.21
YTD savings: $666.88
YTD coupons used: 145
YTD waste: $29.77

We decided to increase our grocery budget to $280 again for May. We need to stock up on meat (I have some great rebates that I want to take advantage of), want to buy more fresh produce and we NEED diapers (very-very soon!!)

Seriously????

I opened my yahoo account today, and the first article in the news I've seen was this- Nutella is not Broccoli (direct link) . The lady sued Ferrero because she thought that Nutella was a healthy choice for her kids, and later found out it was not. She won, and the settlement was 3.5 million dollars.

Seriously??? Like are you for real??? She did NOT KNOW that Nutella was not healthy for her kids?? I swear, it sometimes feels that stupidity pays off in this country. How about reading a label? It is a chocolate spread, after all!

I only wonder though how much of it she will actually get, or will the majority go to her lawyers and to be spread out among other claimants?... I find this absolutely ridiculous!

ps- and just so you know, I myself love Nutella - just not every day...

Buying a minivan

We are planning to buy a minivan within a year. There are a few reasons for it. First is that our 19-year old Saturn is on its last leg. It really is. It has and electrical problem that will cost about $2000 to fix. And the car itself is worth about $500-700 right now. So we are not fixing it. Second is that we want another child. We have two amazing boys. But we want to try for a girl. And if we have another boy, well, that's plenty of boys for us :) The third and ,probably, the most important is lack of seats in our current car for those times when my parents or friends are in town. In February, when my parents were here, we used both of our cars to go places but again one of them was our Saturn.
We would love to buy with cash. I know, we are ambitious! We will definitely buy used. Probably, about 4-5 years old with low mileage on it. We don't need any bells and whistles. What we need is a reliable car with easy maintenance. My husband is not very handy with cars but my BIL is, and he always helps us with little repairs. And for bigger stuff we have a friend who has his own shop. He's extremely honest and charges very reasonably.
Right now we settled our minds on Honda Odyssey or Toyota Sienna. The problem is we don't know much about buying a car. We checked our credit score (and it's good...phew) but we hope we would  not need to finance anything. We know about Carfax and plan to have about $1000/year saved for possible repairs on an older car.
But what else should we keep in mind? Taxes, fees? What should we avoid? Or should we look at other brands-KIA, Nissan? We know very little about them. Right now we owe a 2005 Toyota Corolla. We got it almost new, and in the last 6 years we barely had  any problems with it (knock on wood...). Hubby uses it for work, and he travels a lot. And so far I love everything about our little Corolla. That's  one of the reasons why we trust Toyotas. And Hondas are about the same (and their minivans even look a little fancier, I think :)
Well, any advice is greatly appreciated!!

Stuff...

Pin It    Ugh, on top of a new Blogger, my computer was not working all Sunday! Apparently, they were doing a scheduled maintenance that they forgot to mention about to their customers. It actually started on Sunday at 11 am. So I was sitting here writing my usual Sunday post when I realized that my Internet is no longer working. Sweet!! After a bunch of fruitless attempts to revive it, plug and unplug, calls to the company with all-to-familiar phrase, "No one is available to get your call..." , I gave up and turned off the computer for a day. They turned everything back on at 11 am today, so I'm back :) But I really enjoyed time with my family. We went to Church, then went for a long walk and played outside a lot.
Due to the computer issues, I'll skip The Inspire me Sundays and go straight to my usual Monday post.
We actually had a really great weekend. I spent half of Saturday digging in a garden, planting, doing some yard work. I now have "an herb garden" that I'm really excited about:

Our local Lowes had herbs and some veggie plants for $1.50 last week, so I "stocked up" :) Our house is pretty dark, I don't even have a spot to start my own seeds here. Hubby built a tiny windowsill for me a couple of weeks ago, and I keep a plant of basil and a plant of dill there. We actually tried our first homemade pesto this week. It was delicious! So I decided to add another basil plant, and also greek oregano, thyme, parsley and cilantro. I just love to grow my own fresh herbs!
Too bad, the weekend is over...I've been doing laundry all morning and had a little helper with me (in a dryer. No worries, it's all turned off:):

And I also cleaned a fridge, and I'm happy to announce that this is my food waste this week:

Yep, lots of nothing!! We do have some broccoli  and leftover pesto that need to be used this week, and I'll make another batch of baked egg rolls for the freezer tonight to use up some chestnuts.

So here's our menu for this week. Last time, when I made my 2-week menu, I planned ham for the Easter dinner but we ended up having dinner at my FIL's so I never cooked that ham. Honestly, I only could stick to my 2-week menu about 70%. From now on I'm going to do it week per week like I did it before because it seems to work better for us. And ham will be on our menu this week:

Mon.- ham, mashed potatoes, green beans
Tues.- salmon, brown rice, steamed broccoli
Wed.- ham-broccoli-rice casserole
Thurs.- spaghetti with pesto, salad
Fr.- leftovers
Sat.- ham sandwiches/soup
Sun.-pasta, shrimp, frozen veggies

                                       pasta with homemade pesto

Why???

Why, why, why, blogger, would you change?? I don't understand why they try to fix something that is not broken in the first place!! I'm a person of habit, and I really dislike changes like this... I'll resume my normal posting tomorrow after I learn how to play with a new everything here...

We got it!

Pin It    I really apologize for  lack of posting lately. But I just didn't want to bore you with what's happening here. Because nothing is really happening. I doubt you'll be interested in listening to me mumbling about my cleaning schedule. I try to stay away from the stores right now, so no new shopping updates. Well, actually there is one. Here it is:

Yes, we got it!! We ended up paying around $280 (tax included), so full price. But it's worth every penny! It' a 14' trampoline, and my kids have a blast on it. And because of the inclosure, I don't have to keep an eye on them every second. And I'm especially happy that we saved for it and payed cash instead of using our credit card. Which brings me to another topic. My older kid will have the last month of pre-K in May but the tuition is already payed for. Hubby and I talked it over and decided to start saving for a new camera. The one we have now is a 5-year old very primitive shoot and point Kodak that eats batteries within hours if you don't get them out as soon as you make a picture. This is very annoying! We are not exactly ready to go with a DSLR one just yet because we are both pretty pathetic photographers but we definitely need something of higher quality. One of the options we are considering is Nikon D5100 but we haven't really shopped around yet. Do you, guys, have any good suggestions? All ideas are appreciated. And on the money note, we decided to take that $55 that we paid for a tuition before and start putting it towards the camera fund. Also whatever money we have left in our grocery or eating-out budget, will also go towards the camera.

Oh, and the last thing that I wanted to share with you is that a canning season is officially opened in our house! I got my hands on some cheap strawberries last week:

Nobody but me really likes strawberry jam here, so I decided to try something different. I stumbled upon this recipe for The Chocolate Strawberry Sauce . So I decided to try it, and let me tell you-it is SO GOOD! It is very rich. The recipe asks for way too much sugar. I actually added 1 cup less, and I still think I could cut at least one more. I also used just 1 bag of pectin. But it's so naughty and yummy! Especially with vanilla ice-cream. My Kid kept coming back to lick a plate...And guess, what some of my friends will get for Christmas (if I don't eat it all before...):

Have a wonderful Thursday, everyone!!

The sunshine award.

My dear Carla at  My 1/2 Dozen Daily   kindly presented be with the Sunshine award. I'm so humbled and thankful! Honestly, it was one of these days today. It's grey and rainy outside, I was expecting somebody who never showed up, my peas are still not sprouting in my garden even after 2 weeks...Don't let me start...Carla surely put a little sunshine into my day!

Oh, and when you go to visit her blog, be sure to check out her giveaway. Donate for a great cause and you might be a lucky winner of one of her cutest totes!

The reward comes with a few questions, so here is another  glimpse for you into my head (sorry if it's too boring):

1.What is your favorite color?
I actually have two. I love everything green. I love green trees, my green kitchen with a green basil on a windowsill. I love my green shoes, and I even owe a green purse. But I also love white (just not on the walls).

2.What is your favorite animal? Hmmm...never thought of that before.Well, I'm definitely a dog person even though I'm terrified of the bigger kinds-it comes from the time I was very young and got jumped on by a nasty German shepherd-it's definitely one a few kinds I WILL NOT consider a home pet.I think, I like pandas even though I don't know much about them. I just think they are so stinking cute:

 3. What is your favorite number? My favorite number is 13. I was born on the 13th, and for some reason I always have luck with this number. I'm not superstitious, and I don't believe for a moment in anything associated with 13. To me it's a good number!

4. What is your favorite non-alcoholic drink? I'm with Carla, I do not consume alcohol period. But I'm not sure what drink is my favorite. I do drink lots of water, at least, 8 cups a day. But I would, probably, go with a milkshake. Vanilla one. I'm funny this way. I love me some full-strength (no diet!) thick vanilla shake...Mmmm

5. Which do you prefer- Facebook or Twitter?
I honestly have never even been on Twitter. I just don't have time for it! But I do love Facebook. Mainly, because it's the best way for me to connect with my friends back home and to see all the new and wonderful things happening to them (like that my very close friend that I haven't seen in more than 7 years is expecting a little girl...I'm so happy for you, Anya, and love you so much!)

6. What is your passion?
My faith, my family, my country, my crafts. Nuff said...

7. Do you prefer giving or receiving presents?
I absolutely love to give! My Dad has a huge bag with gifts for any occasions. I'm a lot like him. I love to give things that I put some work into or look for something special for a particular person. Before we got married, my Hubby would just give cards to everyone. Not anymore :)

8. What is your favorite pattern?
Carla, I'm with you! I love love love stripes...

9. What is your favorite day of the week?
I don't think I'm going to sound  new if I say it's definitely Sunday. I love going to Church and being rejuvenated and spiritually uplifted, and I love a quiet time with my family. But I also love Fridays when I know there is a weekend ahead!

10. What is your favorite flower?
Well, this one is easy. I LOVE lilies of the valley:

They are so delicate and smell wonderful. In nature, they love to hide in  a shade and only bloom for a very short period of time in May. I have very tender memories from my childhood when my Dad and I would pick them for a bouquet for my Mom in the nearby forest every spring. I miss lilies of the valley here!

And I want to give Sunshine award to these my wonderful friends (because I can't wait to read their answers):
Dear Ms. Sammy Leia at SAMMY Leia Money Saver
Dear Rafiki at Upendilife (you know you asked for it, right? :)

Food waste Monday and a couple of updates

Pin It    This morning started really busy for me. I did two loads of laundry, them took the Kid to the doctor. His rash (Fifth disease) is not going away and it's actually itching pretty bad right now. So the doc gave us a couple of prescriptions that Hubby dropped off in the afternoon. Hopefully, it will help clear out his skin.

We stopped by the Russian store on the way home (it's in the neighborhood where I doctor works, so I don't go there very often) and left with a $38. 60  damage worth of food. The Russian store is expensive! But I need my native food sometimes. I always buy lots of Russian pickles, summer sausage, Russian sauerkraut. Or and mayonnaise. I'm sorry, all the mayo lovers, out there but if you haven't tried A Russian mayo yet, you don't know what you are missing!! It's SO good and creamy, American version cannot compare...Sorry :)  So I got all of that and a few more things. Bye bye, my grocery budget...

Talking about our budget, we actually did really good last week. I wanted to spend $25 at first but then my Hubby found the receipt that we forgot about. And we had to buy Benadryl unexpectedly for the Kid (almost $7!!). So I bumped it to $50 for a week, and we spent $45.65 (and saved about $15). We also did great in all the other categories, so this month looks very optimistic so far.

So when I came back home, I did another load of laundry, some dishes and cleaned the fridge. We have very little food waste this week. I didn't throw away anything today but on Friday I had to chuck some black bean salsa:

I love black bean salsa but, unfortunately, I'm the only one who eats it. There was about a cup left (about $1 worth, but could be even less) that was forgotten on the back of the fridge. But that was the only food waste this week. We ate LOTS of leftovers. I'm still following our 2-week menu that I created last week but, I think, next time I will stick to my 1-week plans. It just works better for us.

And the last thing I wanted to share with you today is a picture of my beautiful tulips. The spring is definitely in full bloom right now!

Have a wonderful Monday, everyone!!

The Inspire Me Sundays

Pin It "There are people who have money and people who are rich".
                                 Coco Chanel

A couple of days ago I stumbled upon this video on youtube. It may take a while to load but wait for it. It's worth it:

I often  sometimes complain about  the things we don't have, home improvements that we "need" and don't have money for. She really reminded me to be grateful for what I already have. I can't believe I'm still complaining when our house is 5 times bigger than all her living square footage, and I have twice as less kids as she does? But she is still enthusiastic and smiling, and her life is rich and full! Her kids might not have all the latest gadgets and toys but she loves and tries to do her best for them. And especially, spend as much time as possible with them. Because only your loved ones can make your life truly happy. Money can help you be more comfortable but they can't make you rich!

Have a wonderful Sunday, everyone!

Have you started thinking of Christmas yet?

Pin It    You are, probably, thinking right now- what is she, crazy?? Didn't we just celebrate Christmas like a couple of months ago? I know, I know but I love to plan early. This year I joined Lisa at Cents to Save in her $500 Holiday Challenge. I increased our amount to $550. I think, $500 would be enough if we didn't have to send 2 packages out, one of which is for my parents and my Grandma in Russia. It usually costs around $50-70 to mail a package to them. My sister and I split the cost but even then we rarely send anything to them (usually, only 2 times a year, combining all Birthdays in 1 parcel).

Back to Christmas. We have 21 family members to give gifts to (including ourselves)  plus some little things for friends and neighbors. I know, it sounds like a lot but our combined family is pretty big. My Hubby has 7 brothers and sisters (4 from each of his Dad's marriages) but we do the drawing between them and all the spouses, so each person has 1 name (or 2 in our case, 1 per each of us). Because of the drawing, I never shop for siblings in advance but I do buy toys over the year for kids in the family.

So how can you start preparing for Christmas right now?

1 First, make a list of people you will give gifts to. It usually includes your family members, close friends, kids' teachers, neighbors etc. The list will give you an approximate idea of how much money you need to put aside for presents.

2. Consider other expenses you will possibly have. This can include Christmas dinner/ party hosting if you can know in advance that it's going to be your responsibility, travel and mailing expenses, Xmas cards, a surprise for your mailman, a gift for a child in need, even a new outfit for an office party. Give yourself room for extra expenses that seem to always pop up during the season.

3. Start putting aside some money. It may seem like you have 2/3 of the year until Christmas but in reality it's not that long. I like to think that I only have about 37 weeks left. What needs to be done in 37 weeks? Even if you start putting $10 a week aside right now, you'll have a nice cushion of $370 sitting in a bank for your peace of mind. Double this amount, and you'll have enough of money for all the holiday needs of an average family without using your credit card.

4. Think homemade. Homemade gifts are a lot more personal. They really show care and hard work. They show love. But they also take time. Some are easy to make within a couple of weeks, others take months (if not years). If you want to give some homemade gifts, start now! Every year I make at least a couple of gifts myself. Last year I made this hat and scarf set for my 1-year old  niece ( very simple):

I also made these Birthday boards for my MIL and FIL (I'm sorry for the terrible pictures-these are from a cell phone):

I'm nothing close to Debby or Carla with their amazing creations but I do what I can. And I know, you can too!! The web world is filled with simple and fun craft projects that you can try to make for your loved ones.

5. Buy in advance. As I said before, I'm not  a great fan of buying much in advance because (especially, with kids and teenagers) preferences change every week month. But I like to stock up on little surprises and souvenirs throughout the year.  Just a couple of weeks ago I added the first gift to my Christmas box (yes, I have a big box where I keep all the gifts):

I scored these cute jars for free!! Our local bookstore was giving them away to the first 100 customers, and I was among the first. I'm going to fill them with seasonal candies, decorate with a pretty ribbon and give to three wonderful ladies in the neighborhood that I visit about once a month.

The Christmas season is a very special time but it can also get very stressful. With some preparation like these simple steps you can make this time a lot more enjoyable and concentrate on the true meaning of Christmas and spending time with your loved ones.

Baked egg rolls

Pin It    I've been pretty busy the last few days. I went to a bunch of stores looking for new beer rebates (success!), finally cleaned a freezer and organized everything that needs to be used soon, cooked up a storm, payed the bills, did a mystery shop. But I don't really have anything worth writing about. So I thought I'd share with you a recipe of my baked egg rolls that I was working on today (I'm secretly addicted to egg rolls...shhh!!)

You'll need:

1/2 package egg roll wrappers (or you can double the recipe to use up the whole package)
3 cups shredded cabbage
2 medium size carrots
1 small can chestnuts (I used about 1/2)
1 package Hormel  Canadian bacon, pizza style (or use nicely diced chicken or cooked ground meat, about 0.5 lb)
1 tsp. ground ginger (or use fresh)
3 Tbsp. fresh green onions (I used 1Tbsp. dry. That's just all I had)
2 cloves garlic, minced
4-5 tsp. soy sauce
olive oil
vegetable oil  cooking spray

Preheat your oven to 400 degrees. Shred cabbage, grate carrots, nicely dice chestnuts.

Heat olive oil in a pan on medium heat, add veggies, ginger, green onions and garlic. Mix in soy sauce and cook on medium-low until soft, stirring frequently. While vegetables are cooking, chop bacon very nicely. Take a skillet off the stove and add bacon.

Lay 1 egg roll on a working surface and add a heap full Tbsp. of a cabbage mix.

Wet the edges  of a wrapper with water for easier seal. Turn two corners inside like the envelope and then roll like a burrito. Repeat with the rest of egg rolls. Lightly coat your baking pan with a cooking spray and put the egg rolls there. Spray lightly over all of the egg rolls.

Cook for 8-10 min, then flip and cook for another 5-7 min, until slightly brown. Then get your favorite dipping sauce (I used homemade orange marmalade that didn't thicken enough :) and enjoy!

I'm finally done with our menu

Wow, it's really hard to create a menu for 2 weeks!! It seems like we have plenty of food but when I create a menu, I wonder if we would really want to eat what I thought of in two weeks...I did a bit of shopping today and got plenty of fruit and veggies, so we should be fine for some time.

   But back to my menu:

Mon. 4/9- leftovers
Tues.- Domino's Artisan pizza (won on Facebook giveaway. Wohoo!), milkshake
Wed.- Veggie patties, sweet potato fries, corn on the cob
Thurs.-pork chops, potatoes, broccoli
Fr.- breakfast burritos for dinner
Sat.- sandwiches/ B-day dinner with my sister's family
Sun.- soup/cutlets, mashed potatoes, salad

Mon 4/16- leftover soup
Tues-ham, leftover potatoes, salad
Wed.- Russian crepes(see picture above) with homemade jam, bananas and Nutella
Thurs.- ham, broccoli, rice casserole
Fr.- pasta with meat sauce, salad
Sat.-leftovers/BBQ with friends
Sun.- crock pot pulled pork sandwiches, cut up veggies.

We'll see how this menu will work  for us...But it definitely should help me save some money over the next two weeks!

Food waste Monday

Pin It     I had a really crazy day today. I didn't even have a chance to create a menu. I want to make one for the next two weeks. I cleaned the fridge but I still want to go through our freezer. So the menu is coming tomorrow. We decided to bump up our grocery budget for this week to $50, partially because Hubby forgot to tell me that he spent $10.69 in Walmart last week. So this will come out of weekly budget. Plus we had to buy Benadryl for the Kid. He broke into rash which later turned out to be Fifth disease, a viral infection, harmless but looks scary. Our OTC meds come out of grocery budget too. And whatever is left we'll use for food this week. So it's mainly going to be milk, bread and produce.
We do have some food waste to report:

We threw away half a can of peas that somebody (wasn't me!!!:) left on the countertop overnight. We also had a bit of cilantro that got yucky and gross (I forgot to take a picture). And I actually wanted to use this cilantro to make some back bean salsa but never got to it.
So the peas were 50c/can= 25c wasted, and it was about 20c worth of cilantro

I'll update our grocery spending so far this month. We don't have much left but I still think we can do it.

Total spent this month (in one week): $115.04
Total saved: $58.96
Left to spend this month: $134.96+$7 from last month= $141.96
YTD spending: $839.94
 YTD savings: $566.89

Shopping trips this week...or how to blow a hundred bucks in one week!

Pin It    We surely did it! We spent about $100 this week. We actually started last Saturday which technically was still March but we already started our new monthly budget. We will go on a shopping freeze next week with a budget of $25 for all 7 days- basically for milk, bread, fruits and veggies.
So here is what we bought this week. We went to Walmart and Smiths (both a few times) and Winco. In Winco Hubby grabbed a pizza for I-really-don't-want to cook night on Friday. It was $6.98 for 14" Hawaiian(my favorite) but I have a beer rebate for  $5 back any pizza. I don't count beer rebates as savings because when we get the money back, I just put them away for the canning season this year. I have almost $100 in this envelope right now. I'm excited to try some new canning recipes in summer.
   OK, back to our shopping.
   Walmart trip #1:

Not much special about this trip. I got Activia for 99c (bought 4, price-matched to $1.99 in Macey's and used $1 coupons), cucumbers -20c ea (price-matched to Rancho Market), radishes-25c/bunch (price-matched to Rancho), green grapes-$1.29/lb (pr-m. to Smiths). I bought some other stuff, not pictured here And I got these Mama's Tortillas for $1 but I will never get them again. They were absolutely terrible! They were so stuck to each and just falling apart.

Anyway, total spent: $18.41
Total saved: $9.52
Coupons used: 4

Smiths trip #1. That's where I spent the most money:

I got a case of corn and a case of stewed sliced tomatoes. I like Kroger stewed tomatoes. I can  literally eat them out of the can, maybe, with a pinch of salt :). I saved about 25c per can. I also got Ronzoni pasta for 75c after sale and Catalina. Not the best price but we are down to 1 box at home. I got Dole Ceaser salad, clearanced to $1, 2 packs cream cheese for $1 ea, boca meatless burgers for $1.99 after sale and $1 e-coupon. And I got a 5lb bag of Tillamook shredded medium cheddar for $9.99 after sale and $1 cheese coupon. I got some other things but they are not really worth mentioning.

Total spent: $44.87
Total saved :$22.27
Coupons used: 2

   Walmart trip #2:

Highlights: I got 2 dozen eggs-price-matched to 88c in Reams and used 55c/2 coupon that was available on Facebook a week or so ago= 61c ea!! Also got Kraft Fresh Take meat coating mix (free with a homemailer coupon), Bush's grilling beans (free with homemailer coupon), more cucumbers for 20c ea ( we had lots of salads this week :), oranges- 6lbs/99c (price-matched to Rancho), 1 avocado for 25c (price-matched to Rancho) Sarah Lee 100% whole wheat bread- $1.68 after $1 coupon on a package, 1 box barilla pasta-28c after $1/1 coupon.

Total spent: $12.86
Total saved: $15.08
Coupons used: 6

   Smiths trip #2
I sent my Hubby to grab us a ham for Easter dinner but turned out that we will have dinner with in-laws.So ham will go to a freezer for now:

I'm not sure how much of a sale was the ham but it was $1.29/lb. Butter was $1.67 (will freeze), and ICBINB was on sale for $1.99, and I used $1.25 =74c ea. Also got a pack of Twizzlers (not pictured)-10 for $10.

So total spent: $14.45
Total saved: $4.71
Coupons used: 2

Smiths shopping #3

When Hubby got all the stuff above, he also got a Catalina for some Kroger baby stuff. It had 3 coupons on it. So today I went to look for beer rebates (didn't find any new ones :( , and decided to use these coupons. Here is what I got:

But I also had some e-coupons that were loaded on my card. Usually they do not allow combining of both e-coupons and manufacture coupons but this time both were discounted ( I'll take it!! I didn't even remember I had e-coupons loaded, so it was a nice surprise when I saw a receipt):
Kroger diapers- usually $6.21, used $2 manufacture coupon off catalina and $1 e-coupon= $3.21
2 packs 40count Kroger wipes- usually $1 each, used $1.50/2 catalina coupon+ 2 60c e-coupons= 70c MM!!
2 cans baby snacks- on sale for $1.50 ea, used BOGO catalina coupon=75c ea

Total spent: $4.23
Total saved: $7.38
Coupons and e-coupons used: 6

Not bad for a pack of diapers, 2 packs wipes and 2 cans of snacks!!

So these are my shopping trips for this week. We got quite a bit of food, so I want to try to make a two-week menu plan on Monday. We'll see how that will work ...

Total spent this month (in one week): $99.05
Total saved: $58.96
Left to spend this month: $150.95+$7 from last month= $157.95
YTD spending: $822.97
YTD savings: $566.89
YTD coupons used: 125
YTD waste: $28.07

It never hurts to ask...

                                                         via

We filed our taxes about two weeks ago, and while we were there at the office, the tax lady mentioned that they haven't received the American opportunity tax credit in 2010. . The American opportunity tax credit, which expanded and renamed the already-existing Hope scholarship credit, can be claimed for expenses paid for tuition, certain fees and course materials for higher education in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012.

So we asked if you could do an amendment, and when they said yes,we scheduled another appointment for today. They actually found another mistake that was made in our original documents. Anyway, with all of this we are getting back $719 more. Our state return changed to be $40 less, so we owe this money now (we'll pay it next week). But I'll take $679 difference. I'm one happy girl today! This month really turns to be a good one so far!!

Saving money on clothes

Pin It Remember when I told you that my Grandma gave me $200 for my Birthday? I actually ended with $240- I got another $20 from my SIL and another one from my MIL. After lots of planning and thinking, we decided to use $100 towards vacation, $100 for my gardening and $40 for new clothes for me. I'll show you later what I got with $40. But first, I was thinking of the ways how we save money when we buy clothes. Maybe, some of you can use these ideas too:

Shop thrift stores and yard sales in upscale areas. You can find some great bargains in thrift stores. Over the years I found quite a few nice, new or like-new pieces. But if you want a better quality, I would travel a little to go to a thrift store in a better area. People with nice income donate higher quality clothes and more likely to give away even new stuff with tags instead of returning it to the store.

Buy what you need or what you have budgeted for. No matter where you shop, when you see some bargains, it's so easy to overspend. I think, it especially applies to second-hand stores. Before you know, you have a cart full of very cute shirts that you don't really need but hey, they only cost $3!! Well, $3 adds up. Buy only what you need. And if you just want/need something new, set a certain amount aside that you can afford to spend.

Shop clearances and out of season. I do love to buy new clothes but I can never pay full price. Lots of stores have deep discounts on surplus items that they couldn't sell. And just because it's on the sale rack, doesn't mean you can't wear it next season. A flowery dress or short-sleeved shirt will look great with a jacket. Last year I got a bunch of T-shirts for the Kid for $1 each. They work great for this summer, and I saved at least $20 on them. And in March I bought a great coat for him for only $7. This coat will be great for next winter. And when you shop, don't hesitate to check even fancier stores or boutiques that you usually will never shop at. Two years ago I found a really cute dress at Nordstrom for only $6.99 on their clearance rack. You never know where you can find a treasure!

Combine sales and coupons- lots of stores allow you to use their coupons combined with other discounts. Sign up for places like Kohls, Macy's, Fashion Bug, and they will e-mail you some nice extra savings. Just a couple of weeks ago I got a $10 off $10+ Kohls coupon (one per customer). I looked at the clearance rack and found this cute mock-layer shirt:

Original price: $44, on clearance for $8.80. I used my coupon and got it for free. My husband also received a similar coupon. He got himself a new belt that was on clearance for free.

Accessorize. This will never get old! Even a simple black dress can look so different with a bulky necklace, a bright scarf ,a brooch, a belt or a colorful purse or shoes. Top with a nice jacket, and it's a completely new outfit! Purchase accessories that are versatile and will work with different items in your wardrobe.

Have a clothes swap. Our Church has a cloth swap every year. Sometimes it's big, other years it's smaller. But it's a great way to get rid of stuff that doesn't fit or you just don't need any more, and get something new without spending any money. Organize a swap with your girlfriends (try to get at least 10 for a better variety of items), and have some fun!! Consider it your grown-up slumber party but give your hubbies a day off away from home :)

These are just a few of ideas. Feel free to add to my list. And how did I spend my $40? I bought this cute tank top in size S and this fun jacket with ruffles on the back (size 6) - click on the items, these are links. Fashion Bug usually sells clothes for girls that are a little bigger than me. But they have a part in the store with items in size S-M. But if you are sizes XS or smaller than I envy you this store might not be for you.

Total before sale: $16.99 and $39.99
Total spent after 40% ( I shopped in a store) and $10 off $25 coupon- $25 for both.
Total saved : $31.98 on both

And I also bought THE FAMOUS dress:
Total before clearance: $29.99
Total spent after clearance price and 20% off any dress Target coupon- $7.57.
Total saved : $22.42

And that means that I have about $7 left to spend. Maybe, I'll hit DI (local thrift store)
Talking about this whole outfit, it's a great example how you can spend very little and still look cute:

Dress- $7.57 (Target clearance+coupon)
Brown Jacket- free (Church cloth swap two years ago)
Shoes- $5 ( Walmart clearance last year)
Purse- $3 (thrift store)
Even nylons-free after Fashion Bug $10 off $10 homemailer coupon.
Total cost: $15.57 . I'd say,not bad!!

So how do you save money on clothes?

Easter bunny...

The Easter bunny is a little sad this year. He is kind of broke. Honestly, for the first 3 years of our son's life he didn't even make it to our house. By the older Kid gets, the higher expectations he has for the poor Bunny. The Bunny doesn't travel too far. He's never been to Russia before. I guess, he taught the people there how to color their own eggs and bake some yummy bread for Easter. But here everyone loves the Bunny. He's funny, and yummy, and generous. For the longest time, Bunny used to just bring colorful eggs but now he slowly turns into Spring Santa. The Bunny doesn't want to disappoint his friends but he feels a little tired from all the expectations.  The Bunny wants to teach children the true meaning of Easter but every day he hears more and more about what he should bring.

What should Bunny do? What does/did/will Bunny bring in your house?

Food waste, menu, goal updates and some goals for April.

Pin It    Last week I did not create a menu. I just didn't feel like it. And I really missed it!! It's nice to have a plan and to know what we are going to eat every night. So I'm back to menu planning. But first,my food waste this week:

Yes! I have none! I'm so excited. I have some salad that needs to be used tonight and a bag of potatoes that I barely bought had a few that need to be used ASAP. But nothing that I can't save!  So here's a menu for this week:

Mon.- shepherd's pie, salad
Tues.-leftovers Chinese from this weekend
Wed.-chicken bean enchiladas
Thurs.-tuna patties, salad
Fr.-dump-everything-in-one-pot soup
Sat.-spaghetti with tomato sauce, broccoli
Sun.-honey garlic pork chops, mashed potatoes, veggies (Easter dinner)

                                                       via

I also wanted to quickly update on my March goals. We ended selling a bed set and a toy organizer on KSL and made $145. It really helped to outweigh some of our medical bills. We still need to have a few to come through but it looks like we might not need use our EF to pay for any of them. It's quite a relief! I did manage to stay below budget on almost everything. And I actually have $7 left in our grocery budget that I will roll into April :)

And when it comes to my weight loss goals, I didn't achieve them :( I only lost two pounds instead of four but I'm surprised I even lost anything considering how sick we all were! On the other hand, I lost two inches on my waist (and my goal was 0.7"!), and my dress that I bought from Target fit perfectly for our special dinner last Friday:

I'm going to keep working on my weight loss in April. Actually, my Hubby and I have a friendly competition this month. We set up some personal goals for ourselves, and we will update on them every week. We aim to achieve 100% in our goals, and whoever does the best, wins 20 bucks to use for whatever. So these are my goals:

1. Lose 3 more pounds
2. Take vitamins every day
3. Drink 8 glasses of water every day
4. Do full-body exercise (including 25 min. on a bike) 3 times a week
5. Do plank 5 times a week ( I really need to keep working those after-baby-two-years-later muscles...sigh!)

The chances of us having a tie are very slim. Even a glass of water makes a difference. But I have an advantage over him- all of you, my dear friends!! :) I'm so so grateful for your support, encouragement and friendship. And I'm grateful that you keep accountable :)

As for financial goals, I'm not really sure what our plans are. This morning I found out that it's going to be my last week babysitting. The Mom that I sit for didn't even have a decency to tell that to me personally- she just sent me a text!! I know they are going through a lot, and it looks like he might've lost a job but how hard would it be to just honestly tell me that?? I would understand! We know what it's like to be on a tight budget. I feel kind of bumped right now. So for the month of April, I think, we'll try even harder to stay within a budget. And we will see if I need to start looking for a job. I love to be home with my kids, and we can survive on my Hubby's salary but we don't save at all, and we can't stay forever in a stage of survival.

But even with  all that, the sun is shining, and I do believe that April will be better than March was!! I don't know why but I have a very good feeling...

April Fool's or not?

                                                          via

Years ago when my BIL was still dating my Hubby's sister, he decided to play a prank on her. He put a rubber band around a trigger on a kitchen sink sprayer...Very famous trick! He really wanted to get his girlfriend but surely enough, my Mother-in-law was the one who turned on the water first!! Good thing that she's so sweet and forgiving...But I bet his terrified face was precious! This prank has been repeated hundreds of times in our family and with friends (only do it with very close friends who you know for sure will not be offended or annoyed!)

So are you for or against April Fool's Day? I'm all for some little, funny and easy-to-do pranks. So far today I wrapped a toilet seat with a saran wrap(didn't really work. My 5-year old noticed it...), sew together Hubby's underwear, put some vaseline on a door knob I knew for sure he was going to touch, and put Baby Orajel on his toothbrush. But I truly dislike embarrasing or Internet (aka, hey, I'm pregnant!!!) jokes. I also don't want to spend too much time preparing for a prank- unless it's something totally worth it!

So what was the best prank you played on somebody, or somebody played on you? What was the worst?

Oh, and because it's Sunday, I do have a quote for you:

"Imagination was given to man to compensate him for what he is not; a sense of humor to console him for what he is. "

Francis Bacon, the English Philosopher (16th century)

Have a fun day today!
